Georgetown Men's Lacrosse: 2014 Season Preview

Hoyas continue to build in second year of Kevin Warne

Brian Phipps begins his second season on the Hilltop where he will work with the team's defense and goalkeepers.

In his first season on the Hilltop, Phipps helped mold a defensive unit that was among the BIG EAST leaders in ground balls and caused turnovers. GU finished second in the league in ground balls (31.53/game) and caused turnovers (7.87/game) in 2013. Phipps also developed first-year starting goalkeeper Jake Haley, who finished among the conference leaders in saves (10.38/game).

Phipps arrived at Georgetown after serving as an assistant coach, working with goalkeepers with Kevin Warne at Maryland in 2012. Phipps served as both the Director of Lacrosse Operations in 2010 and a Volunteer Assistant Coach in 2011, directly following his All-American career in College Park.

In 2012, his second season as an assistant coach, Phipps helped develop goalie Niko Amato, who earned All-ACC and USILA Honorable Mention All-America honors following the 2012 season.

During his playing career, Phipps was a four-year starter, who is currently fourth in Maryland history in saves (473). Phipps earned ACC Freshman of the Year honors in 2007 and continued to develop into a 2010 USILA All-American goalkeeper. In 2010, he also served as a team captain. Phipps also excelled in the classroom, earning All-ACC Academic Team honors for four consecutive seasons and earning USILA Scholar All-America honors following his senior season.

Phipps has played professionally in Major League Lacrosse (MLL) for the past four seasons with the Ohio Machine and the Chesapeake Bayhawks. He was named an MLL All-Star during the 2011 season.

Phipps, an Annapolis, Md. native graduated from University of Maryland in 2010 with Bachelor of Arts degree in history. Prior to college, Phipps attended the Severn School, where he was a member of the national honor society.
