Prior to Georgetown: Sutherland saw the first significant action of his career, playing in five games during his junior season. He was a solid contributor in the face-off circle, winning 16-of-32 restarts (.500). Sutherland had his best performance against Dartmouth, taking a season-best 6-of-8 face-offs, besting his 5-of-8 performance at Yale. Sutherland had seven ground balls on the season, including a career-high three vs. the Big Green. In his second season with the Big Red, Sutherland saw action in one game, playing vs. Denver. He picked up one ground ball vs. the Pioneers. Sutherland saw action in two games as a rookie, playing against Binghamton and Yale.
High School: A three-year letter winner at Manhasset HS, Sutherland was named honorable mention All-American and received all-county honors as a senior captain. He also played in the Exceptional Senior game. Sutherland was named all-conference as a junior and helped his team to a No. 1 ranking in the country and an undefeated state championship as a sophomore. He also earned all-conference and all-county honors in track and lettered in football and cross country.
