Charlie McCormick scored three goals for the Hoyas
Feb. 12, 2014
WASHINGTON - Junior midfielder Charlie McCormick (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) provided a spark for the Hoyas offense, scoring all three of his goals in the second quarter, as the Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (1-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) defeated Mount St. Mary's (0-2, 0-0 NEC), 10-4 in it season-opener at Multi-Sport Field on Wednesday afternoon.
McCormick, a preseason All-BIG EAST selection led the Hoyas with three goals, while junior Anthony Heaton (Essex Fells, N.J./Delbarton) and freshman Peter Conley (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) each scored two goals for the Hoyas.
Graduate student Tyler Knarr (Eagleville, Pa./LaSalle College) went 11-for-18 at the face-off X and picked up a team-leading eight ground balls, while junior defender Bryson Greene picked up seven ground balls and caused four turnovers to help a GU defense that held MSM to just 22 shots.
The Hoyas outshot The Mount 13-4 in the first quarter, but led just 1-0 afterward, with junior attack Reilly O'Connor's (Brooklin, Ontario [Canada]/The Hill Academy) goal at the 2:21 mark providing the only thing to show for GU's offensive possession advantage.
In the second quarter, junior midfielder Anthony Heaton (Essex Fells, N.J./Delbarton) added to the Hoyas lead early in the second, scoring on a pass from freshman Eduardo White (Littleton, N.J./Kent Denver) to take a 2-0 lead. MSM's Clayton Wainer answered just over a minute later to cut GU's lead in half, before McCormick took over.
McCormick scored unassisted less than a minute later and then would add two more goals late in the second quarter after a Grant Fisher goal to help GU take a 6-2 lead into halftime.
After the half, senior attack Jeff Fountain (Lutherville-Timonium, Md./St. Paul's) assisted a pair of GU goals, helping Heaton score his second, before finding freshman Devon Lewis (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) for his first collegiate goal to give the Hoyas an 8-2 lead.
Mount St. Mary's scored a pair of goals, while holding Georgetown scoreless for close to 15 minutes, closing the gap to four goals, 8-4, midway through the fourth quarter. Conley scored his first of two goals, both assisted by junior Bo Stafford (Greenwich, Conn./Brusnwick), with 6:59 remaining, before scoring the final goal of the game with 2:32 left to help Georgetown to a 10-4 win.
Redshirt junior Jake Haley (Grasonville, Md./Queen Anne's County) earned the win, making five saves and allowing four goals for the Hoyas.
The Hoyas will have a short time to celebrate its season-opening victory, as they turn around and travel to Navy (1-0, 0-0 Patriot League) on Saturday, February 15. The opening face-off at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium is set for noon.
