HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Georgetown University men’s lacrosse team (1-3) held No. 8 Hofstra University (3-1) scoreless for more than 20 minutes between the second and third quarters, as the Hoyas used a 5-0 run to retake the lead and never look back, in an 11-6 victory at James M. Shuart Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It was the Hoyas first victory of the season.

Junior midfielder Peter Conley (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) had three assists during the Hoyas game-changing run to finish with two goals and a career-high four assists. Freshman attack Daniel Bucaro (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) scored three goals and had one assist in GU’s first win over a top-10 opponent since 2013.

Sophomore goalie Nick Marrocco (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) had a season-high 15 saves, while the defense held the high-scoring Pride offense to a season-low six goals. Junior defender Charlie Ford (San Carlos, Calif./St. Ignatius) caused three turnovers and picked up two ground balls for the Hoya defense.

Graduate student midfielder Joe Bucci (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) helped the Hoyas to a quick start, scoring the game’s first goal on an assist from Bucaro to take an early lead. It was the first time that GU scored first this season. Bucci added his second goal of the game less than five minutes later, finishing the pass from Conley to give GU a 2-0 lead.

Hofstra went on a run of their own, as Brian Von Bargen broke through for the Pride with 2:18 remaining in the first quarter, as the Blue & Gray held a 2-1 edge going into the first break.

A Georgetown penalty led to Hofstra’s game-tying goal, as the Pride added an extra-man goal at the 14:19 mark in the second quarter. Von Bargen scored again and Josh Byrne added a between-the-legs goal during a four-goal run, giving the Pride a 4-2 lead midway through the second quarter.

Bucaro ended the run, scoring an extra-man goal on Conley’s second assist of the afternoon to pull GU back within one goal, at 4-3, with 5:39 remaining in the first half. The Hoyas added another extra-man goal at the 2:04 mark in the second quarter, as sophomore attack Zeke Morrill (Baltimore, Md./Gilman[Deerfield]) scored on the feed from junior midfielder Devon Lewis (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) to even the score at four.

Sophomore faceoff specialist Peter Tagliaferri (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) sparked GU’s third quarter outburst, winning a pair of faceoffs that led to back-to-back goals. Bucaro scored less than a minute into the third, and Lewis added another one 30-seconds later on Conley’s third assist. Conley found sophomore attack Stephen Quinzi (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) on the crease for his fourth assist at the 10:36 mark to help the Blue & Gray take a 7-4 lead.

Georgetown’s defense held the Pride without a goal for over 20 minutes, until Byrne ended the Hoyas five-goal run with 2:39 remaining in the third, cutting the GU lead to two goals, at 7-5. Conley put the Hoyas back in front by three, bouncing a shot past the goalie on an assist from sophomore attack Matt Behrens (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville), helping Georgetown outscore Hofstra, 4-1 in the third quarter.

The Hoyas continued to roll in the fourth quarter, as Bucaro tacked on his third goal of the day and Lewis found Behrens on the crease for a goal to take a 10-5 lead early in the final frame. Each team would score once more, as Conley added his second goal of the game to close the scoring and seal Georgetown’s 11-6 victory.

The Hoyas return home to Cooper Field when they host Fairfield on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Georgetown Athletics official website – www.GUHoyas.com – with Jeremy Huber and Earl Brewer providing the call.
