Matt Winter made 12 saves in the Hoyas win over Harvard
March 10, 2012
WASHINGTON - Senior midfielder Zack Angel (Park Hall, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter and senior goalie Matt Winter (New Haven, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) and the Hoyas defense held No. 20 Harvard (2-2, 0-0 Ivy League) to just one more score to lead the Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (2-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) to a victory on Saturday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field.
In a series where each of the four games have been decided by one goal, neither team ever led by more than two goals in a game that featured five tie scores.
Angel had his second consecutive three-goal game for the Hoyas and junior attack Jason McFadden (Bel Air, Md./Calvert Hall) had his first career hat trick to lead the offense. Junior attack Travis Comeau (Red Deer, Alberta[Canada]/The Hill Academy) had two goals and an assist, while junior midfielders Brian Casey and Dan McKinney each had one goal and two assists in the victory.
Winter, in his second career start, made 12 saves, including four in the fourth quarter to earn his second consecutive victory. Senior defender Patrick Schmitz (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) caused four turnovers for a defense that caused 16 overall.
The Crimson scored the game's opening goal at the 11:21 mark in the first quarter, but Georgetown would go to work on the offensive end soon after. McFadden answered, ripping a shot past Harvard goalie Harry Krieger with 7:21 remaining in the quarter. McKinney followed, putting GU in front, 2-1 on a driving shot, for his first goal of the season.
Harvard quickly tied the score, but Casey would make them pay following a slashing penalty, scoring an extra man goal on an assist from Zac Guy to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Again, Harvard tied the score, this time at three, but Angel and McFadden each pumped in extra-man goals less than a minute apart on the non-releasable penalty, to put GU in front 5-3. Comeau later scored his first goal of the game with 19 seconds left in the half after a stretch of over 10 minutes of scoreless action, to give GU a 6-4 lead going into the break.
The teams continued to play back-and-forth, as Jeff Cohen scored his first of three second half goals for Harvard to open the third quarter. McFadden answered again, depositing the Casey feed in the back of the net to put GU back in front by two goals, at 7-5. The Crimson tied the score again at seven, but Angel would break a tie for the second time, putting the Hoyas in front on McKinney's assist.
Comeau gave the Hoyas some breathing room with the team's fifth extra-man goal of the game, scoring on an acrobatic move close to the cage on the feed from Casey, to take a 9-7 lead into the fourth quarter. Though Harvard's Daniel Eipp scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter, tying the score at nine.
Freshman Joe Bucci (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) made his first career goal an important one, breaking the tie midway through the fourth quarter. Bucci drove to the left and blasted a shot past the goalie with 9:04 remaining in the game to take a 10-9 lead. Angel would help seal the Hoyas victory just under two minutes later, taking the feed from McKinney, eluding a defender and scoring his third goal of the of the game and team-leading eighth of the season, giving the Hoyas a two-goal edge, at 11-9.
Harvard scored once more, but Winter made two key saves through the final four-and-a-half minutes, as Georgetown would wind the clock down on the offensive end to seal an 11-10 victory.
