Reilly O'Connor helps Hoyaas to win in BIG EAST opener.
March 16, 2013
WASHINGTON - Sophomore attack Reilly O'Connor (Brooklin, Ontario/The Hill Academy) set career-highs with five goals and four assists, as the Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (3-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) opened its BIG EAST Conference schedule with a 16-8 victory over previously undefeated Providence (5-1, 0-1 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field.
Georgetown snapped a two-game losing skid by posting 16 goals, its highest offensive output since a 16-6 win over Army in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on May 15, 2005. Aside from O'Connor's career day, senior attack and fellow Canadian Travis Comeau (Red Deer, Alberta/The Hill Academy) scored a season-high four goals and added two assists and sophomore midfielder Charles McCormick (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) added two goals and two assists in the win.
"Guys just stepped up today," Comeau said. "Brennan Bicknese came streaking down from the other end to make a play and scored a goal, guys like Charlie McCormick were streaking down in transition and I think we played with a little more confidence and took advantage of our opportunities. Tyler Knarr was a huge factor in our success. The more times you have the ball, obviously the more opportunities you have to score and he's pretty quick at getting off the draw, so we had those fast break opportunities."
Redshirt junior Tyler Knarr (Eagleville, Pa./LaSalle College) gave the Hoyas plenty of opportunities on offense, going 17-of-25 at the face-off X, with 13 ground balls and three caused turnovers. Knarr stepped up late, going 6-for-9 in the fourth quarter, leading a four-goal GU run to close out the game.
"What you love about Tyler is that he's competitive," Head Coach Kevin Warne said. "He comes off the field and says, "coach I'll get it next time," and it's such a joy to coach, does all the right things, does all the things off the field and today was just a result of all of his hard work and preparation."
Redshirt sophomore Jake Haley (Grasonville, Md./Queen Anne's County) earned his second win of the season, making seven saves, as the Hoyas defense held the Friars to a season-low eight goals.
Comeau opened the scoring for Georgetown at the 11:03 mark in the first quarter, converting the feed from senior attack Brian Casey (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) to take a 1-0 lead. The Friars responded, as Andrew Barton and Sean Wright scored less than three minutes apart to take a 2-1 lead with 5:13 remaining in the first, before O'Connor spurred a seven-goal GU run.
O'Connor scored two consecutive goals, the second coming with six seconds left in the first quarter, putting GU back in front 4-3. He then assisted a pair of goals from junior attack Jeff Fountain (Lutherville-Timonium, Md./St. Paul's School) early in the second quarter to extend the lead to three goals.
The Blue & Gray kept rolling, scoring five goals in the first five minutes of the second quarter. Sophomore midfielder Joe Bucci (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) found a streaking John Wujciak (Essex Fells, N.J./Delbarton), who scored a fastbreak goal. O'Connor scored a minute later on Comeau's assist, before McCormick and O'Connor each scored unassisted goals to cap the 7-0 run, giving Georgetown a 9-2 lead.
The Friars added two goals before halftime, cutting the lead to five goals at the break. Sean Wright scored quickly to start the third quarter, making the score 9-5, but Georgetown would respond. Senior defender Brennan Bicknese (Ridgewood, N.J./Delbarton) scored his third career goal, on an assist from O'Connor. Comeau then added two consecutive goals to extend the lead back to seven goals, at 12-5.
Providence would again battle back to within four, at 12-8, after a three-goal run, but Knarr would win the next five face-offs to help Georgetown score the last four goals of the game to clinch a 16-8 win over the Friars.
Georgetown returns to action on Wednesday evening, when they host defending National Champion No. 10 Loyola (Md.) at Multi-Sport Field with the opening face-off scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets are now available for the Hoyas game with the Friars and all men's lacrosse home games.
