Georgetown Men's Lacrosse Falls to No. 9 Loyola, 13-8 on Wednesday Night

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (3-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) outscored the defending national champion Loyola Greyhounds (6-2, 2-0 ECAC) in the second half, but were unable to overcome a six-goal first half deficit, falling 13-8 on Wednesday night under the lights at Multi-Sport Field.
Redshirt junior Tyler Knarr (Eagleville, Pa./LaSalle College) went 16-of-23 at the face-off X, including all five face-offs in the second quarter, and picked up eight ground balls, but the No. 9 Greyhounds held Georgetown to just one first half goal, on sophomore midfielder Charles McCormick's (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) game-opening goal at the 13:07 mark in the first quarter on one of sophomore midfielder Joe Bucci's (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) two assists.
The Greyhounds scored the next eight goals, winning the second quarter, 4-0 to take a 7-1 lead into the half. Loyola opened the third quarter with a quick goal to expand the lead to seven, before the Hoyas would answer.
Senior attack Travis Comeau (Red Deer, Alberta/The Hill Academy) scored an unassisted goal to stop the 7-0 run, making the score 8-2. The goal was also Comeau's 78th career goal, moving him into a tie for ninth in program history in goals.
Sophomore attack Reilly O'Connor (Brooklin, Ontario/The Hill Academy) followed less than a minute later with his first goal of the game, to bring GU within five, but the Greyhounds answered with two more as Zach Herreweyers and Nikko Pontrello put LU back in front by seven. O' Connor scored again, but two more Loyola goals, gave the Greyhounds its largest lead of the day, 12-4 with 5:10 remaining in the third quarter.
The Hoyas would continue to battle, as senior midfielder Dan McKinney (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) scored with 2:50 remaining in the third quarter, making the score 12-5. Jeff Fountain scored in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter for the Hoyas sixth goal. After one more Greyhounds goal, junior midfielder Grant Fisher (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) scored his first collegiate goal at the 11:23 mark in the fourth quarter to bring GU within six, at 13-7. Fountain added one final goal for the Hoyas on an assist from O'Connor with 9:50 left in the game, making the score 13-8, the eventual final.
Redshirt sophomore goalie Jake Haley (Grasonville, Md./Queen Anne's County) took the loss, making eight saves for Georgetown.
The Hoyas travel south to Durham, N.C. to take on No. 12 Duke University (6-4) at Koskinen Field on Saturday, March 23. Opening face-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
