April 7, 2012
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (5-5, 1-2 BIG EAST) rallied back from a four-goal deficit, taking a two-goal lead late against St. John's (6-4, 2-2 BIG EAST), but the Red Storm scored two-goals in the final 21 seconds of regulation and the game-winner in overtime , as the Hoyas fell, 13-12 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field.
Senior face-off specialist Brian Tabb (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) won 19-of-23 face-offs, including 16-of-17 in the second half, while picking up 11 ground balls for a Hoyas team that held a 37-23 ground balls edge during the game.
Junior attack Zac Guy (Tully, N.Y./Tully) had two goals and three assists for a career-high five points and junior midfielder Brian Casey (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) scored three goals in the losing effort. Junior midfielder Dan McKinney (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) had two goals and one assist, while senior defender Bobby Boyle (Rumsen, N.Y./The Lawrenceville School) had five ground balls and three caused turnovers to lead the defense.
The Hoyas fell behind late in the first quarter, as Colin Keegan broke a scoreless tie with 18 seconds left in the quarter to give St. John's a 1-0 lead. Kevin Cernuto extended the lead to two goals early in the second on an unassisted goal.
Casey caught the feed from Guy and scored his first goal of the game with 8:29 remaining in the first half to put GU on the board for the first time. The Hoyas and Red Storm traded goals for the rest of the first half, as McKinney and Casey each scored in a fast-paced second quarter, going into halftime trailing 5-3.
St. John's Kieran McArdle scored just over a minute into the third quarter, as Keegan scored three minutes later to give the Red Storm its largest lead, 7-3.
The Hoyas would own the rest of the third quarter, as Guy started the Hoyas' 6-0 run with a goal on an assist from Jason McFadden. Travis Comeau followed with a goal less than a minute later on an assist from Guy to bring Georgetown within two goals, at 7-5.
McKinney scored on an assist from Zack Angel with 5:41 left in the third to cut the deficit to one goal, before Brian Will tied the game at seven with 48 seconds remaining in the third. GU was not done, as McKinney found a cutting Casey from behind the goal to give the Blue & Gray its first lead of the game, 8-7 with nine seconds left in the third. After a face-off win from Tabb, Gerry Reilly picked up the ground ball and streaked toward the cage to score with three-seconds left in the quarter to give the Hoyas a 9-7 lead.
In the fourth quarter St. John's answered with back-to-back goals from Kevin Cernuto and Alex Lagodich to tie the score at nine. Freshman Joe Bucci, on a clear, took the ball down the right sideline and made his way to the cage, taking a diving shot to put the Hoyas back in front, 10-9.
McArdle tied the score for St. John's, but McFadden scored on the assist from Guy, then Guy beat his defender and went to the cage to score his second goal of the game to put the Hoyas in front 12-10 with 3:51 remaining in the game.
St. John's did not quit, as Ryan Fitzgerald brought them within one goal, scoring with 21 seconds left in the game. After winning their only face-off of the second half, St. John's quickly got the ball into the hands of Harry Kutner, who scored his third goal of the game to tie the score at 12 with seven seconds left.
Tabb won the face-off with seven seconds left and quickly got the ball down field to give the Hoyas a final shot, but St. John's goalie Jeff Lowman stopped shots by Casey and Comeau to send the game into an extra period.
In overtime, GU goalie Matt Winter, who finished with nine saves, deflected a shot out of bounds. St. John's retained possession and 30 seconds later, Ryan Fitgerald scored the game-winner for the Red Storm to defeat the Hoyas, 13-12.
The Hoyas will return to action on Sunday, April 15 when they host BIG EAST rival Notre Dame at 1 p.m. at Multi-Sport Field.
