WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men’s lacrosse team (2-9, 1-2 BIG EAST) did not score first or last, but they used a 6-1 first half run to take control and won the ground ball battle to stay in control to earn an 8-5 victory over the Providence College Friars (7-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) on a cold, blustery Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field.

Sophomore goalie Nick Marrocco (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) made 14 saves and allowed just five goals, as the Hoyas snapped a six-game win streak, while ending the Friars’ four-game win streak. Junior defenseman Ed Blatz Jr. (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) picked up a game-high five ground balls and the Hoya defense held defending BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week Will Mazzone without a goal in the victory. Sophomore faceoff specialist Peter Tagliaferri (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) went 8-of-13 at the faceoff X.

Junior midfielder Eduardo White (Littleton, Colo./Kent Denver) broke out on offense with a career-high three goals, doubling his season total in his second start of the season. Sophomore attack Craig Berge (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) added two goals, while freshman midfielder Patrick Aslanian (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) had two assists.

The Friars scored first, as Michael Perettine rifled a cross-field feed into the goal at the 11:45 mark in the first quarter.

It would take Georgetown nearly seven minutes to answer, as senior midfielder Corey Parke (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) finally broke through, weaving through the defense to tie the score at one goal apiece at the 4:57 mark in the first quarter. The goal would begin an 8-2 run through the first three quarters.

Sophomore attack Stephen Quinzi (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) kept Georgetown’s offense rolling, scoring on the feed from Aslanian to take a 2-1 edge early in the second quarter. White extended the advantage to 3-1, scoring his first goal of the game with 12:07 remaining in the half.

Perettine scored his second goal of the game to bring PC back within one goal, but that would be as close as they could manage.

Georgetown started a 3-0 run moments later, when White dodged his way to the middle of the field and rifled a shot into the lower right corner at the 8:47 mark. Berge converted an extra-man opportunity on an assist from freshman midfielder Daniel Bucaro (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) with 6:08 left in the quarter. Berge closed the half by scoring on a rebound in front of the cage with 54 seconds remaining to give GU a 6-2 lead going into the break, the Hoyas largest halftime lead of the season.

The Friars’ Keenan Assaraf scored to open the third, but GU tacked on two more goals to take its largest lead of the game before the end of the quarter. White added his third goal of the game, rifling a shot past the goalie on Aslanian’s assist. Graduate student midfielder Joe Bucci (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) converted another man-up chance, cutting to the goal and finishing on a feed from sophomore attack Matt Behrens (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) to give Georgetown an 8-3 lead.

Providence’s Conner Byrne scored in transition just 39 seconds into the final frame. Joseph McHale added another goal to cut Georgetown’s lead to three goals, but three one-minute penalities allowed Georgetown to control possession throughout the end of the final quarter to hang on for an 8-5 victory.

The Hoyas return to action on Saturday, April 16 when they travel to Villanova to take on the Wildcats. Live coverage on the CBS Sports Network begins at 5 p.m.
