April 27, 2013
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Sophomore attackman Reilly O'Connor (Brooklin, Ontario/The Hill Academy) tied a career-high with six assists and added a goal, while redshirt junior attackman Zac Guy (Tully, N.Y./Tully) scored three goals to help the Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (6-8, 3-3 BIG EAST) defeat Rutgers (2-13, 0-6 BIG EAST) 15-7, on Saturday evening at Yurcak Field. The victory clinches the fourth seed in next week's BIG EAST Tournament at Villanova University.
The Hoyas will play in the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time, after missing the inaugural field in 2012. Redshirt junior Tyler Knarr (Eagleville, Pa./LaSalle College) won 12-of-21 face-offs, picked up 10 ground balls and had an assist, while redshirt sophomore goalie Jake Haley (Grasonville, Md./Queen Anne's County) made 13 saves and held the Scarlet Knights to seven goals to pick up his fifth win of the season.
Georgetown's extra-man offense, which has been the most efficient unit in the BIG EAST during conference play, converting each of its three opportunities, while the man-down unit continued its strong play, killing the Scarlet Knights only chance.
O'Connor took control of the game early, finding Travis Comeau (Red Deer, Alberta/The Hill Academy) on an early extra-man opportunity to give GU a 1-0 lead within the game's first minute. A minute later, O'Connor fed Joseph Bucci (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca), who scored to give the Hoyas a 2-0 lead.
Rutgers got on the board on Scott Klimchak's goal, midway through the first, but the Hoyas offense would continue to be efficient. O'Connor recorded his third assist of the day, finding Grant Fisher (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) cutting to the left side of the cage for the Hoyas third goal.
Charles McCormick (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) helped GU convert another extra-man opportunity with 1:22 left in the first and Zac Guy (Tully, N.Y./Tully) added another unassisted goal, wrapping around the cage to score with three seconds left in the first quarter, to take a 5-1 lead.
The Hoyas picked up where they left off in the second quarter, as Comeau scored a fast break goal on William Flatley's (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) feed at the 13:51 mark in the second. Senior attack Brian Casey, making his return from injury, scored less than a minute later to give GU a 7-1 lead. Guy added his second goal of the game on O'Connor's fourth assist with 44 seconds remaining in the second quarter to convert the Hoyas third extra-man opportunity of the day.
Georgetown scored three goals within the last minute of the half, but the Scarlet Knights did manage to add a man-down goal, as Andrew Parrilla scored on the assist from Joseph Nardella. The Hoyas scored two more goals in the last 25-seconds. Casey scored his second of the game, after Knarr won the face-off clean and made the feed to Casey on the crease. Knarr won the following face-off, as O'Connor found Guy cutting on the left side of the cage for the goal, giving GU a 10-2 lead at the half.
Rutgers scored two goals within the first two-and-a-half minutes of the third quarter, before the Hoyas settled down. O'Connor picked up his career-high tying sixth assist on a feed to Bucci, for his second goal of the evening. Fisher would added his second goal of the evening, before O'Connor scored his first on a fast break. Senior Jason McFadden (Bel Air, Md./Calvert Hall) added a goal on an assist from sophomore midfielder Bo Stafford (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) to put the Hoyas in front 14-4 at the end of the third quarter.
Rutgers' goalie Kris Alleyne, held the Hoyas scoreless through the first nine minutes of the fourth quarter, until Dan McKinney (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) finally broke through on the assist from McCormick to give GU a 15-4 lead. Rutgers added three more goals the game back within eight, 15-7, the eventual final score.
The Hoyas will move on to the BIG EAST Tournament for the first-time, after missing the inaugural 2012 field. Play begins at Villanova University on Thursday, May 2.
