WASHINGTON - Georgetown University’s Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach Kevin Warne has announced the team captains for the 2017 season. Senior Nick Carpenter (Oakton, Va./Paul VI), redshirt junior Peter Conley (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck), senior Charlie Ford (San Carlos, Calif./St. Ignatius) and senior Michael Mayer (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s) will lead the Hoyas on the field during the upcoming campaign.
“We’re really excited about the appointment of Charlie, Michael, Nick and Peter as our 2017 team captains,” Warne said. “They have done a really good job providing leadership to their peers and mentoring our newer players so far this season.”
Carpenter, a key cog to the GU defense as a defensive midfielder, had a breakout season in 2016. The local product set career highs as a junior in just 11 games, doubling his season best in caused turnovers with eight and nearly tripling his ground balls record with 15.
Although injuries have marred each of his past two seasons, Conley returns in full health for 2017 as one of the Blue & Gray’s top offensive threats. A preseason All-BIG EAST selection in both 2015 and 2016 after earning First Team All-BIG EAST honors as a freshman, Conley has scored 50 goals to go with 25 assists in just 27 career games with the Hoyas to rank ninth all-time in GU history in both goals and points per game.
Ford, a defensive stalwart for the Hoyas, returns as a long stick midfielder. An All-BIG EAST performer as a sophomore, he leads all returning players with 81 grounds balls, collecting at least 30 in back-to-back seasons, to go with 19 caused turnovers in his career. He was also recently named a 2017 preseason All-BIG EAST selection by Inside Lacrosse.
Mayer anchors the close defense once again in 2017. Named by Inside Lacrosse as a preseason Honorable Mention All-American in both 2016 and 2017, he leads all returning players with 23 caused turnovers in his career and has hauled in 69 grounds balls during his time on the Hilltop.
Georgetown is receiving votes in the USILA/NIKE Division I Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Preseason Poll and opens the 2017 season on the road at High Point on Tuesday, Feb. 14. The Hoyas play a strong schedule that features seven games against teams that made the 2016 NCAA Championships.
