WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (3-5, 0-1 BIG EAST) travels to Villanova (2-5, 1-0 BIG EAST) to take on the Wildcats on Tuesday night at Villanova Stadium. The opening face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the game being broadcast live on CBS Sports Network.
This will be the second consecutive game the Hoyas will play on CBS Sports Network. Dave Ryan will call the play-by-play with Evan Washburn providing analysis on the broadcast.
LAST GAME: The Hoyas fell to then-No. 2 Loyola (Md.), 10-9 on Wednesday night. The Hoyas and Greyhounds played to seven ties and five lead changes, as GU held a one-goal advantage in the fourth quarter. Loyola scored the eventual game-winner with 52-seconds remaining in the game. Graduate student Tyler Knarr (Eagleville, Pa./LaSalle College) went 15-of-22 at the face-off X and picked up 15 ground balls, while adding a goal. Freshmen midfielders Peter Conley (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and Devon Lewis (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) each scored two goals, while juniors Charlie McCormick (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) and Bo Stafford (Greenwich, N.Y./Brunswick) each had one goal and one assist. Junior goalie Jake Haley (Grasonville, Md./Queen Anne's County) had 11 saves in the loss.
GEORGETOWN VS. VILLANOVA: The Hoyas and Wildcats meet for the 29th time on Tuesday evening, with GU trailing the all-time series 11-17. Georgetown has lost the last three games, including a season-ending 15-12 loss in the 2013 BIG EAST Championship Semifinals. The Hoyas last victory against the Wildcats was an 11-9 decision on May 7, 2011. Knarr won 13-of-19 face-offs in that game.
KNARR AMONG THE NATION'S LEADERS CLIMBING GU RECORD BOOKS: Knarr is currently 12th in the NCAA and first in the BIG EAST with a .626 (109-of-174) face-off win percentage and second in the NCAA and first in the BIG EAST with 10.62 ground balls per game. Knarr was among the nation's leaders in both categories last season. Knarr's 350 face-off wins is fourth in GU history, while his 226 ground balls is the fourth best total in GU history. His career face-off win percentage of .593 is second to only Andy Corno in GU history. Knarr also set the single-game program record with 18 ground balls in the Hoyas win over Furman.
FRESHMAN PROVIDE INSTANT IMPACT: The Hoyas have started at least three freshmen in each of the season's eight games, and four in the last three. Conley leads the team with 26 points (16 goals, 10 assists). After moving from attack to midfield three games ago, Conley has scored nine goals. Midfielder Devon Lewis has emerged as one of the team's top offensive threats, tied with Reilly O'Connor for third on the team with 10 goals on the season. Defender Michael Mayer has started each game and Charlie Ford has started the last two on defense, with classmate Ed Blatz Jr moving into the rotation. The Hoyas have also received contributions from midfielder Eduardo White, who has cemented himself to the Hoyas second midfield line and given the team two goals and one assist this season, as well as long stick middie Chris Pauzer and short stick defensive middie Nic Carpenter also seeing time.
ABOUT VILLANOVA: The Wildcats enter Saturday's contest with a 2-5 record after defeating Marquette 10-8 on Saturday afternoon. Anchored by the three goals of sophomore Johnny Gallaway. Senior Kevin O'Neil leads the team with 16 points via 12 goals and four assists while Johnny Gallaway follows closely behind with 12 points via 10 goals and two assists. 17 Wildcats have posted points through seven games this season...Senior face-off specialist Thomas Croonquist has posted a .514 win percentage this season, taking 74-of-144 attempts...Freshman goalkeeper Dan Willis has earned the starting role for Villanova and posts an 9.95 GAA while making 59 saves to start the season. His save percentage currently stands at .468.
