Aug. 27, 2012

WASHINGTON - WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Kevin Warne announced that Matt Rewkowski and Brian Phipps will join the Hoyas' coaching staff for the 2012 season. The two hires will complete Warne's staff for his inaugural season on the Hilltop. Rewkowski comes to Georgetown after spending two years as the Associate Head Coach at Cornell, while Phipps worked with Warne as an assistant coach at Maryland for the past two seasons.

"Matt is one of the best offensive coaches in the business," Warne said about Rewkowski. "You look at what he was able to do during his two years at Cornell and all the success he's had wherever he's gone and I'm just really looking forward to bringing his knowledge to our guys."

"With Brian, I have worked with him for two years and he has a tremendous future as a coach," Warne said about Phipps. "His speciality is with the goalie position, but he's also done a great job working with me and the defense . Both guys are hardworkers and have tremendous personalities, which will be an asset in every aspect of the program."

Rewkowski, a Johns Hopkins graduate and Bethpage, N.Y. native, comes to Georgetown after spending his last two seasons as the Associate Head Coach at Cornell, where he was in charge of the team's offense. Prior to Cornell, Rewkowski spent four seasons at Hofstra, helping the Pride to 36 victories, a Colonial Athletic Association championship (2008), a CAA regular season title (2009), and three berths to the NCAA tournament (2008, '09, '10). He also had a hand in coaching eight All-Americans, 27 All-CAA selections and six North-South All-Stars. His 2010 offense was ranked in the top 10 in the nation in five offensive categories, including scoring (fifth, 12.93), scoring margin (fourth, 3.93), points per game (fourth, 20.5), assists per game (sixth, 7.57) and shot percentage (fourth, .352).

Rewkowski spent one season as an assistant coach on the scholastic level in Denver while he was a member of the Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse. He played his collegiate lacrosse at both Johns Hopkins and Duke, winning the 2005 NCAA Championship as a senior captain with the Blue Jays.

Brian Phipps, a Maryland graduate and Annapolis, Md. native, served as both the Director of Lacrosse Operations in 2010 and a Volunteer Assistant Coach for the past two seasons at Maryland, directly following his All-America career.

At Maryland, Phipps was responsible for coaching goalies and assisting with the overall defense, while running gameday substitutions.

During his playing career, Phipps was a four-year starter and fourth in Maryland history in saves (473). The 2010 All-ACC goalkeeper was also a team captain during his senior season He was the ACC Freshman of the Year in 2007 and a two-time All-ACC Academic Team selection.
