WASHINGTON - Early Saturday morning on Multi-Sport Field, the Georgetown University men's lacrosse program re-ignited its annual alumni game, as over 45 Hoyas alums, including eight former All-Americans, strapped on helmets and pads and picked up their sticks to take on the current Georgetown roster.
The alumni game was the final scrimmage in a fall that included matchups against Keio University, as well as Princeton and Air Force at the Play For Parkinson's Lacrosse Series. But the2013 fall finale provided more than just an opportunity to see how it stacks up under its first year coaching staff; it was an opportunity to reconnect with members of the program's legendary past.
Several generations of Georgetown players ranging from 1998 up through the Hoyas class of 2012 were on hand to challenge the current team, as Hoyas from as far back as the 1960's were on hand to watch the game and take part in the festivities.
"It's great for the program," Head Coach Kevin Warne said. "We want to have a family atmosphere and make sure those guys feel like they are always welcome back at any time and remain a part of the Hoya family."
"It's special," Crease Club President Trevor Casey said. "The alumni are a special group, we've all stayed really close and just having a chance to get back together and step on the field and reconnect with the team is a great stride in bonding with the current players and new coaching staff."
The current squad showed the pay-off from the hard work it turned in during its fall season, scoring early against the Hoyas alums. Warne's Hoyas also turned in a strong defensive performance that would make the alums proud, holding the accomplished offensive alumni squad to three goals through three quarters. The alums rallied in the fourth to eventually close within six goals for a 15-9 final score.
"They were taking it very serious, which is great for us," Casey said. "They gave us a great run, you could just see the tenacity that they played with, they were intense, they are in great shape and they played really hard."
Warne and the Hoyas coaching staff hopes that Saturday's game was seen by the current squad as inspiration and more than just the final fall scrimmage.
"Those guys wore the jersey, they played four years of great lacrosse here and certainly we want our current guys to aspire to be like them," Warne said. "If we can do that and can make sure that is a part of the values of this program
