WASHINGTON - The No. 3 Georgetown University men's soccer team had its season opener spoiled on Friday as the squad fell, 2-0, to the University of California-Berkeley Golden Bears at Edwards Stadium. It marks the first loss in a season opening game for the Hoyas since 2011. Georgetown is now 0-1, but will look to rebound on Sunday at Stanford University.
"I thought the guys played well and looked really good for the first half hour where we had chances, but we just didn't take them and that made a difference in the game," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "We hit a wall with the team 30 minutes in and the last 60 wasn't appealing."
The Blue & Gray came out looking sharp with a number of chances early. Georgetown controlled possession and the pace for much of the first half.
Despite the Hoyas' advantage, it was the Golden Bears who got on the board first when Connor Hallisey found the low right corner on a tough shot to make it 1-0 in the 41st minute.
GU battled back, but went into the half trailing, 1-0.
Early in the second half, a Hoya foul in the box gave Cal the opportunity it needed as Steve Birnbaum connected on the ensuing penalty kick to go ahead by two.
The Blue & Gray didn't give up with some solid balls into the box and a late header by senior Gabe Padilla (Sacramento, Calif./Jesuit) that was close. However, GU just couldn't find the back of the net eventually falling, 2-0.
Both squads had 10 shots in the game, but the Hoyas had just three on goal. Each was also awarded two corner kicks. Cal goalkeeper Justin Taillole took the win in the net with three saves, while Georgetown junior Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) managed four stops.
"The positive is that we did some really good things in first 30, we just needed to find a way to get a goal or two back," said Wiese. "Cal is a talented veteran team and this isn't the way we wanted to start, but it's a long season."
The teams had met once previously, in 2009. That year, Cal defeated Georgetown in the District, but the Hoyas answered with a big win on Sunday over a ranked UCLA squad.
The Blue & Gray will have no time to rest as they travel to nearby Stanford University for a tough matchup on Sunday. Georgetown is 1-0 all-time against Stanford with the lone meeting coming in 2011 when GU won 1-0 in double overtime at home. The staff is no stranger to the Cardinal as Wiese spent five seasons there and earned a master's of science degree in product design (mechanical engineering) in 1998.
Stanford faces the University of Maryland on Friday evening.
