WASHINGTON - The No. 9 Georgetown University men’s soccer team battled into extra minutes, but fell early in overtime, 1-0, to the Xavier University Musketeers (5-1-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) in both squads’ BIG EAST Conference opener. It marked the first loss of the season for the Blue & Gray that falls to 4-1-1 on the season and 0-1 in league play.
“I have no complaints on our guys tonight, we played well against a good Xavier team and we ran a lot of the game,” said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. “Our problems today were similar to last week were we were backed in and didn’t have enough good chances. Hopefully this is a resilient group and they respond to the loss in preparation for next week.”
Xavier had the first good opportunity as a series of services into the box resulted in a Musketeer header that went just wide of the post.
Halfway through the first, the tides switched as the Hoyas began to gain more possession. With the minutes ticking away, GU had a number of chances off of setpieces but nothing was dangerous to challenge the XU defense.
Georgetown hunted for the first score of the game on the final plays of the half. However, GU could not find the back of the net going into the break in a 0-0 scoreless tie.
The game sped up and became more physical as the second half began.
The Blue & Gray controlled play, but 13 minutes into the half Xavier looked as if it would get a goal. A ball came from the endline as sophomore midfielder Kyle Zajec (Westport, Conn./Staples) went in for the tackle. It was served in and junior defender Brendan McDonough (Matthews, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) saved a ball off of the line. The ricochet came back to Xavier, and Zajec managed to clear it again as he hustled back into position.
The defense stayed on its heels with a pair of corner kicks looking dangerous for the Musketeers. Despite the pressure, junior keeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) settled it and sent the ball upfield.
With 18 minutes to play, senior midfielder Declan McCabe (Weston, Mass./The Rivers School) also saw a golden opportunity go high as the Blue & Gray began to regain possession.
As time expired in regulation, freshman midfielder Jacob Montes (Lake Worth, Fla./Beaverton [Ore.]) had a strong strike get pushed over the crossbar by XU keeper Zach Nelson forcing the game into overtime. It marked the second contest in a row to go into extra minutes for the Blue & Gray.
Just a minute and a half into the first overtime, it was Xavier that managed to find the back of the net as a header from Samson Sergi off of a corner kick was sent to the back post to give the Musketeers the victory.
The Hoyas outshot the Musketeers, 16-13, but Xavier took three corner kicks to Georgetown’s two. Nelson took the win with three saves to his credit, while Marcinkowski had the loss stopping two shots.
Georgetown will return to nonconference play and Shaw Field on Wednesday as the squad hosts Stony Brook in a 4 p.m., matchup at home. Live stats and a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
