WASHINGTON - The No. 16 Georgetown University men's soccer squad avoided overtime, receiving late heroics from freshman forward Derek Dodson (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) in a 2-1 victory over the DePaul University Blue Demons in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Wish Field. Dodson scored both goals in the victory, including the game winner in the 89th minute, to improve the Blue & Gray to 6-1-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.
"Today was his (Dodson's) day and we had a lot of guys come in and step up," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "I'm really proud of this group for finding ways to win games. That's a tough place to play and DePaul is a good team that has had some unlucky results. It's a good road win for us so we'll take it and enjoy it."
The Hoyas maintained possession early, but it was DePaul that found the back of the net first. A hard challenge in a 1v1 by junior goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) resulted in a Blue Demon penalty kick. Stijn Van Der Slot converted it in the 14th minute to make it 1-0.
As the game wore on, it was Dodson who generated chances in his home state in front of friends and family. One of the best looks, came in the 27th minute but was stopped.
Finally in the 42nd minute, Georgetown broke through. Sophomore Dylan Nealis (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) was on the right side with the ball and sent in a low cross. Dodson, at the near post, managed to redirect it into the net to tie the game at one just before the break.
The Hoyas spent almost the entire second half on offense, but just couldn't find the back of the net. Each stop was stopped as the chances just didn't come.
In the final five minutes, DePaul had a flurry of opportunities with back-to-back corner kicks. The defense stood strong and the Blue & Gray regained control of the pace.
The game winner came as Georgetown was sending in crosses trying to avoid a fourth-connective trip to overtime. Senior midfielder Declan McCabe (Weston, Mass./The Rivers School) sent in a cross from the left side to the near post. Dodson was there once again to send it into the back of the net to give the Blue & Gray the 2-1 lead with a little over minute to go.
The defense held on for the win giving Georgetown its first BIG EAST win of the season.
The Hoyas outshot the Blue Demons, 18-9, and took five corners to DePaul's three. Marcinkowski was awarded the victory with five saves, while Blue Demon keeper Quentin Low tallied six stops in the contest.
Georgetown will have the week off before hosting the Marquette University Golden Eagles on Saturday at Shaw Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser calling the action.
