WASHINGTON - The No. 9 Georgetown men's soccer squad (9-2-1, 2-0-1 BIG EAST) got a late goal from freshman midfielder Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) to get three points on the road in a 1-0 victory over the No. 25 Providence College Friars (7-2-2, 2-1-0 BIG EAST) Wednesday afternoon in the inaugural game at Ray Treacy Track. The game was one of two BIG EAST Conference road games this week for the Blue & Gray.
"Providence came out very excited and they were a tough, disciplined team that made the first 30 minutes hard for us," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "They played like a good team plays at home and it's always tough to get three points on the road in the BIG EAST so we're happy with the result."
Providence was active early on as three quick shots resulted in two saves from Georgetown goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves). A chance by Fabio Machado was stopped by Gomez's fingertips to keep it scoreless in the fourth minute of play.
The defense continued to hold strong as the Friars looked dangerous on a corner kick and Machado kept firing.
In the 27th minute, Georgetown began to get into the act on offense. A free kick in PC's defensive third, gave GU senior captain Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) a chance at the goal. His shot was on target but saved with one hand by Friar keeper Keasel Broome. This resulted in two corners for the Blue & Gray as the offense began to look dangerous.
Late in the first, the Hoyas had one last look off of another corner kick. Neumann's kick went to sophomore defender Keegan Rosenberry (Ronks, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) who shot it just wide of the post to go into the break tied at zero.
The Friars started the second half much like the first with a burst of shots. However, the Hoyas answered with a look from just outside the box that was saved by Broome.
In the 69th minute, the Blue & Gray finally got on the board on a cross by junior midfielder Tyler Rudy (Olney, Md./Sherwood). Rudy sent it from the right side to a waiting Goodman on the near side. The freshman midfielder beat the keeper to make it 1-0 and tally his third goal of the season.
"His goal aside, Bakie was a difference-maker in the second half," said Wiese. "We put him on and the entire game changed, he was an important piece of the three points today."
With Georgetown leading, the Friars pressed on offense looking for the equalizer. Dominik Machado had a shot skim the top of the crossbar and Mac Steeves' shot was saved by Gomez. In the counter, GU's Goodman wasn't done yet as he hit the post on another shot in the 79th minute.
In the 84th minute, Gomez was forced to make another big save on a great combination by Providence. GU managed to hold on for the 1-0 victory.
The Friars outshot the Hoyas, 14-7, and took four corner kicks while GU was awarded three. Gomez had five saves on the afternoon en route to the team's ninth shutout of the season, while Broome had two.
Georgetown will continue its two-game conference road swing with a contest at Xavier on Saturday at 7 p.m. Live stats and webcast will be available through the Musketeers' athletic website.
