WASHINGTON - The No. 13 Georgetown University men’s soccer team downed the Seton Hall University Pirates (5-8-1, 2-4-0 BIG EAST), 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field. The Hoyas used early goals to gain momentum and never looked back improving to 11-2-1 overall and 4-1-0 in BIG EAST Conference play.

“There were a lot of good performances today and certainly some things to grow on,” said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. “But at this point in the season, you have to show up, put in the work, and if you handle the details right, the result will hopefully go your way.”

In the first minute of the game, Seton Hall sent a ball bouncing through the box which no one could get a foot on. Georgetown withstood the pressure and went right back at the Pirate defense.

The Hoyas got on the board quickly as the squad scored in the eighth minute. A foul just outside the box gave senior midfielder Christopher Lema (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial) an opportunity for a free kick. He took full advantage of the opportunity and bent it into the top left corner to make it 1-0.

Just three minutes later, GU struck again. Senior midfielder Declan McCabe (Weston, Mass./The Rivers School) sent the ball to freshman midfielder Jacob Montes (Lake Worth, Fla./Beaverton [Ore.]) 20 yards from the goal. Montes found freshman forward Derek Dodson in the middle of the box splitting two defenders. He took a touch and popped it over the head of SHU keeper Peyton Elder to give the Hoyas the 2-0 advantage.

The game evened out for remainder of the half as neither squad had another dangerous look and the teams went into the break with Georgetown leading, 2-0.

The Pirates didn’t back down in the second half and came out immediately looking for a goal. The Hoya defense stood strong to keep the clean sheet and then added an insurance goal in the 56th minute.

On the score, junior midfielder Ethan Lochner (New York, N.Y./Stuyvesant) crossed a ball from the left side into the near post. McCabe was making the near-post run but missed the ball and it knocked off of a Pirate to the feet of Lema. The senior captain took a good strike and found the back of the net to give Georgetown the 3-0 advantage.

The Hoyas had chances in the closing minutes as the Pirate defense saved a sure goal off of the line and the Blue & Gray cruised to the 3-0 result.

Georgetown outshot Seton Hall, 13-9, and both teams attempted four corner kicks. Georgetown keeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) had five saves in the win, and Elder took the loss as he and the defense combined for four saves on the afternoon.

The Hoyas will be back in action on Wednesday as the team hosts Providence in a 2 p.m. matchup at Shaw Field. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) with Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser calling the action. Live stats will also be available at
