WASHINGTON - The No. 10 Georgetown University men’s soccer team played the Providence College Friars (4-7-4, 1-2-4 BIG EAST) to a scoreless tie Wednesday afternoon at Shaw Field. With the draw, the Hoyas move to 11-2-2 overall and 5-1-1 in BIG EAST Conference play with two games remaining.

“We had a slow start recognizing what they were giving us and as a result I don’t think we got into as much as a rhythm as we would have liked,” said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. “Having said that, for 110 minutes there weren’t a whole lot of opportunities that we gave up. There is some good in that, but from our end, we needed to find a way to execute better.”

The Friars controlled the pace in the opening minutes as an early opportunity was stopped by the Hoya defense. As the minutes ticked away, Georgetown took control gaining more possession. However, for the first 30 minutes of the contest, neither squad looked exceptionally dangerous.

The teams couldn’t get anything going throughout the first as they went into the half in a scoreless tie.

The best chance of the game came 15 minutes into the second half as senior forward Declan McCabe (Weston, Mass./The Rivers School) sent a ball to senior forward Zach Knudson (Oakland, N.J./DePaul Catholic/NC State) at the far post. The ball bounced to Knudson who hit a volley as keeper Colin Miller came out and made the stop to keep it scoreless.

Providence answered back with a pair of looks that were handled by GU keeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle). The Hoyas pushed forward in the final 10 minutes, but never found the answer as the squads went to overtime.

The first look of overtime was for Providence as a free kick bounced through the box and hit four different Friars without a real shot before Marcinkowski collected. On the other end of the pitch, the Hoyas came down and sophomore Kyla Zajec (Westport, Conn./Staples) had a chance at the top of the box that sailed just right of the post.

In the waning moments of the first overtime, a cross from junior midfielder Ethan Lochner (New York, N.Y./Stuyvesant ) was intercepted to force a final 10-minute period.

It would be much of the same in the final 10 minutes as neither team generated a solid chance resulting in the scoreless draw.

The Hoyas outshot the Friars, 13-9, and took five corner kicks to Providence’s one. Both keepers managed two saves apiece in the net.

Georgetown will play its final road game of the regular season on Saturday as the squad travels to St. John’s University for a 7 p.m. matchup in Queens, N.Y. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network and live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
