WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University’s men's soccer squad (5-8-2, 2-3-2 BIG EAST) played to a scoreless tie against the Seton Hall University Pirates (3-10-2, 1-5-1 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Owen T. Carroll Field on Wednesday. The Hoyas now have two games remaining in conference play.

Neither team could gain control in the first half as both had chances. One of GU’s best looks of the half came early when junior forward Zach Knudson (Oakland, N.J./DePaul Catholic) had a good shot that was saved by Seton Hall keeper Julian Spindler. On the other end of the pitch, a Pirate header went into the hands of Georgetown goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) for the save.

The teams couldn’t find momentum as chances went high or were blocked for both squads. After Seton Hall had momentum early, the Hoyas took over late but couldn’t find the back of the net. The teams went into the break in a scoreless tie.

In the 60th minute, junior midfielder Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had a shot from the top of the box that was deflected and hit the post as GU searched to take the lead.

Just a minute later, Seton Hall had an open look go wide as the game opened up. Two opportunities came for GU as a scrum in front of the net resulted in a corner after a shot from freshman forward Davey Mason (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman). On the counter, a dangerous Pirate attempt was thwarted by Marcinkowski.

In the final five minutes, Knudson had one more look that went into the side of the net and the teams went into extra time.

Georgetown had the first chance of overtime as junior midfielder Declan McCabe’s (Weston, Mass./The Rivers School) shot was punched out by Spindler. A minute later, Seton Hall had an attempt sail just over the crossbar as the Pirates looked to end the game.

Early in the second overtime period, Georgetown had a corner kick that was headed to the goal and Spindler came up with a huge save. Minutes later, senior Jon Azzinnari (Nutley, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) sent it to freshman Riley Strassner (Avon, Conn./Avon) whose header was saved on the goal line as it looked like the Blue & Gray would find the game-winner.

In the final minutes, the Hoyas sent in chance after chance. The Seton Hall defense stood strong and the game ended in a scoreless tie.

Georgetown outshot SHU, 16-13, with five chances on goal. The Blue & Gray took eight corner kicks to Seton Hall’s three. Marcinkowski ended the contest with two saves to his credit.
