WASHINGTON - Georgetown University senior men's soccer player Steve Neumann(New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) began his professional career last week signing a guaranteed contract with Major League Soccer on Thursday. Neumann was one of just two seniors to do so as he prepares for the adidas MLS Combine January 10-14 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
By signing a contract, Neumann is guaranteed a spot in the MLS. Typically, players who sign with the league are drafted early in the MLS SuperDraft. The first two rounds of this year's draft will take place on January 16 in Philadelphia, Pa. The remaining two rounds are scheduled for January 21. In total, 76 selections will be made.
"It is quite an honor to sign an MLS contract and an especially great honor to be one of the few players selected to sign before the combine and draft," said Neumann. "There was a lot of hard work that went into achieving this dream over the years and I am ecstatic about the opportunity to play as a professional soccer player."
Neumann, a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist, was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and Second Team All-America after an outstanding senior campaign. He scored a league-leading seven goals in nine games and had 18 points for the top-seeded Hoyas. Overall, he finished with 10 goals and six assists for 26 points, also first in the conference.
Neumann was the 2013 BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year ending the regular season where he began. He was also named First Team All-BIG EAST.
It was the co-captain's fourth-consecutive All-BIG EAST honor and third-consecutive nod to the first team, he was the lone unanimous selection. The Offensive Player of the Year award was Neumann's first and the third in program history following Ricky Schrammin 2004 and Eric Kvello in 1997.
Neumann earned one BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honor and two nods to the honor roll as well as weekly honors from CollegeSoccerNews.com and TopDrawerSoccer.com.
The senior graduated in December with a bachelor's degree from the McDonough School of Business.
