Feb. 11, 2013
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team signed six student-athletes to National Letters of Intent and announced the addition of a seventh to play on the Hilltop. The seven newcomers will be expected carry on the legacy set by the 2012 squad which made history reaching the NCAA National Championship game.
"The staff and I worked very hard in the recruiting process to identify the student-athletes with the character, talent and drive to replace a special group of seniors and help us get to the College Cup," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "After losing a senior class with four MLS-caliber players, it will take a special group of athletes to replace them and we feel like these seven, along with any other additions, will be able to do that."
The 2012 team made history last season with an exciting run to the national championship game. Unranked at the beginning of the season, Georgetown made a trip to the College Cup, an appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament Championship game, the BIG EAST Blue Division Regular Season Championship and the most wins in program history.
The Hoyas finished the regular season as the conference champs and used late heroics to advance to the tournament championship before falling in double overtime. The top seed in the region followed on Selection Monday and the Blue & Gray had a magical home run through the early stages in front of a raucous crowd at North Kehoe Field. This resulted in the program's first-ever trip to the College Cup and a matchup with the University of Maryland Terrapins. The Hoyas played in arguably the best college soccer game of the season going to penalty kicks, before a pair of saves on the final two kicks sent Georgetown to the national championship.
Despite losing in the final, Georgetown did something no men's soccer team has done on the Hilltop and postseason accolades followed with Wiese being named the NSCAA National Coach of the Year and a record four Hoyas being selected in Major League Soccer's drafts.
