WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer squad has announced its 2014 spring schedule. The Hoyas will play five total games with two against local rivals. The Blue & Gray will be without the six seniors from last season including two MLS Draft picks in forward Steve Neumann and midfielder Joey Dillon.
Georgetown will open the spring on Saturday, March 1 host the American University Eagles at 1 p.m., at Shaw Field. Last season the Hoyas downed the Eagles 1-0 in non-conference play.
Following American, Georgetown will host Temple University on Saturday, March 22 at 1 p.m. The Owls were 10-4-4 a season ago and return two all-region players in freshman Robert Sagel and sophomore Jared Martinelli.
The Blue & Gray is scheduled to travel to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County on Saturday, March 29 to face the Retrievers at 7 p.m. UMBC won the America East last year with a mark of 15-1-4 overall. The squad tied Connecticut, 2-2, after a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament, but failed to advance on penalty kicks.
A game against Wake Forest University on Saturday, April 5 rounds out the spring home schedule. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Demon Deacons were 10-6-5 overall and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament downing Navy in the second round, 2-1, before falling to eventual-champ Notre Dame, 4-2.
Georgetown will finish the schedule on Sunday, April 13 at the University of Delaware for a 1 p.m., contest. The Blue Hens went 14-5-1 earning an NCAA Tournament berth. Delaware lost to St. John's by a score of 2-1 in overtime in the first round of the tournament.
The Hoyas finished the season 14-5-2 on the season winning a share of the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship for the third time in four years. Georgetown went to the BIG EAST Championship Semifinal at PPL Park where the Hoyas tied fourth-seeded Providence in double overtime, 0-0, but failed to advance in penalty kicks. Along the way, the Hoyas had impressive milestones including setting the new program record for season shutouts with 14. The squad advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.
