Men's Soccer Announces 2013 Spring Schedule
Feb. 21, 2013
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer squad has announced its 2013 spring schedule. The Hoyas will play five total games with three against local rivals and one against a professional side. The Blue & Gray will be without the five seniors from last season, but return a solid group for the spring games after a historic campaign in 2012.
Georgetown will open the spring on Saturday, March 16 at the Pro-Am Challenge against the Richmond Kickers of the USL PRO. The game will be played at Ukrop Park at 7 p.m., and fans can buy tickets through the Kickers.
"Georgetown had a dream season on their way to a NCAA Championship appearance and Coach Wiese and his staff are to be congratulated for compiling such an impressive group of players," said Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Director of Soccer. "As always, the Pro-Am Challenge is about playing the best that college soccer has to offer and I have no doubt that the Hoyas will provide exactly the type of competition we are looking for in preseason."
Following the Kickers, Georgetown will be at American University on Saturday, March 23. American was 11-6-2 a season ago and advanced to the finals of the Patriot League Tournament.
The Hoyas will host their only home game of the season on Sunday, April 7 at 1 p.m., at North Kehoe Field as the squad hosts William & Mary. The Tribe was 4-10-4 overall last year with wins over Richmond, Drake, Old Dominion and Delaware.
Georgetown will travel to Baltimore, Md., on Saturday, April 13 to face the University of Maryland- Baltimore County at 7 p.m. The Retrievers were 11-4-7 last year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, failing to advance after a 0-0 draw against North Carolina.
The Blue & Gray will round out the spring season on Friday, April 19 in a neutral-site game against the George Mason University Patriots. The game will be played at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Md. at 7:45 p.m. George Mason was 11-6-2 last year before falling in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.
The 2012 Georgetown team made history with an exciting run to the national championship game. Unranked at the beginning of the season, Georgetown made a trip to the College Cup, an appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament Championship game, the BIG EAST Blue Division Regular Season Championship and the most wins in program history.
The Hoyas finished the regular season as the conference champs and used late heroics to advance to the tournament championship before falling in double overtime. The top seed in the region followed on Selection Monday and the Blue & Gray had a magical home run through the early stages in front of a raucous crowd at North Kehoe Field. This resulted in the program's first-ever trip to the College Cup and a matchup with the University of Maryland Terrapins. The Hoyas played in arguably the best college soccer game of the season going to penalty kicks, before a pair of saves on the final two kicks sent Georgetown to the national championship.
Despite losing in the final, Georgetown did something no men's soccer team has done on the Hilltop and postseason accolades followed with Wiese being named the NSCAA National Coach of the Year and a record four Hoyas being selected in Major League Soccer's drafts.
