Nikopolidis Joins Men’s Soccer Newcomers for 2018

April 17, 2018

WASHINGTON - Goalkeeper Giannis Nikopolidis (Athens, Greece/Nea Genia Zirdi) signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Georgetown University men's soccer incoming freshman class for the fall of 2018. Nikopolidis comes to the Hilltop from Athens, Greece where he currently plays with Olympiakos FC.

“With the early departure of JT Marcinkowski to the MLS, it was a priority to bring in a quality goalkeeper in this class, we think we have this in Giannis” said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. “He has a wealth of experience with the Greek national team and within his club, which is one of the top clubs in Greece. His understanding of the game will serve him well as he competes in a challenging league like the BIG EAST and against some of the best teams in the nation.”

In his most recent season with Olympiakos, Nikopolidis has played in the U-20 Greek Super League as well as the UEFA Youth League and trained with the first team. He managed four shutouts in six contests. In the previous season, the goalkeeper posted 13 shutouts in 30 games played in the U-17 Greek Super League as the team won the league championship. His leadership has been apparent as he has been named a captain on these teams since 2015.

Nikopolidis has played significant minutes with the Greek Youth National Team posting four shutouts in 2016-17 and three shutouts during the 2015-16 seasons.

Sports run in his family as his father Antonis is currently the head coach of the U-21 Greek National Team. Antonis Nikopolidis is considered the most successful Greek goalkeeper of all time having been awarded the most caps in national team history and playing an integral role in the 2004 UEFA Euro championship. His mother Vasiliki Stasinou was a member of the Greek National Women’s Basketball Team.

At Nea Genia Zirdi, he is a member of the Business Club where the group works with multinational companies looking for new ideas.

“I chose Georgetown because I felt that it was the right university to base my aspirations at,” said Nikopolidis

Nikopolidis will join four freshmen on the Hilltop this fall as the squad kicks off the 2018 season in August.
