With less than two weeks to the start of the 2017 Georgetown University men’s soccer season, many of the returning Hoyas are finishing up with their summer clubs. While some have stayed on campus to take classes, and others have done internships, all have found a way to train in preparation for the upcoming season.
U-20 U.S. Men’s National Team
Marcinkowski took the spring semester off to train with the U-20 United States Men’s National Team. He had the opportunity to travel and play at a high level in preparation for the 2017 U-20 FIFA World Cup in Korea Republic. His time with the MNT included training and games in Costa Rica on a number of occasions as well as a trip to Korea for the World Cup. The squad eventually fell in the quarterfinals to Venezuela, 2-1, ending their run in the tournament. Marcinkowski started in one game with the squad playing the full 90 minutes, allowing one goal and getting the victory.
New York Red Bulls U-23 (PDL)
Five Hoyas played significant minutes with the New York Red Bulls’ Premier Development League squad. The team won the Mid-Atlantic Division with a record of 12-1-1 before falling in the Eastern Conference play-in game of the playoffs. Knudson led the way as the second-leading scorer on the squad posting 11 goals and one assist in 12 games played. His goal tally tied him for sixth in the PDL. Lochner also appeared in 12 games with two goals and two assists to his credit. Zajec played in nine games tallying one assist, while Deeds and Lema each saw action in seven games. Lema managed one goal and two assists, while Deeds had a goal on the summer.
Long Island Rough Riders
Nealis appeared in three games for the Rough Riders who finished second in the Northeast Division with a record of 8-2-4. The team advanced to the Eastern Conference finals, tying the Charlotte Eagles 1-1 but failing to advance.
Some players chose to train with PDL sides, but did not appear in games with Reading United AC as well as the DC United U-23’s hosting Hoyas this summer. The team will report to the Hilltop for training camp in early August.
