WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team was selected to finish third in the BIG EAST Conference Blue Division in the conference's preseason coaches poll which was released on Monday.
Additionally, senior defender Jimmy Nealis (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team and earned the Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors. Joining him on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team was junior forward Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North), a unanimous selection, and senior midfielder Ian Christianson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Christian Life).
Nealis is a three-year starter on the Hoya backline. He managed three assists this past season where Georgetown posted seven shutouts and allowed just 19 goals the entire year. Nealis also joins Neumann, Christianson and senior Tommy Muller (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) as a captain.
Neumann was the 2011 Georgetown team MVP. He was named First Team All-Northeast Region from the NSCAA and First Team All-BIG EAST. The midfielder ranked first on the team in points scored with 29 tallied on 11 goals and seven assists. Neumann started in all 19 games for the Hoyas and had six game-winning goals to his credit. He was first in the BIG EAST in game-winning goals and second in points, points per game, and goals per game. He was third in the BIG EAST in goals and fourth in assists and assists per game.
Christianson was a Second Team All-BIG EAST honoree in 2011. He was second on the squad in scoring with six goals and one assist for 13 points after starting in all 19 games this year. The midfielder had three game winners on the season and went 3-3 on penalty kicks. His goal in double overtime was one of his game winners to defeat the Michigan State University Spartans. Christianson earned a spot on the weekly honor roll and was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week. Christianson was also named Second Team All-BIG EAST as a freshman. Two years ago, he was an All-Region and All-American honoree a season ago as well as First Team All-BIG EAST and the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year.
This is Christianson's third preseason honor and Neumann's second.
Georgetown was selected to finish third in the Blue Division, up one spot from its finish a season ago. The Hoyas had 72 points and one first-place vote. The coaches selected the University of Connecticut to win the Blue Division and St. John's University to win the Red Division.
Georgetown began preseason on Monday and will host Old Dominion University in an exhibition game at North Kehoe Field on August 14. The season will officially begin on August 24 as the Hoyas take on the University of Virginia in Germantown, Md., at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
