Allen and Nealis Earn BIG EAST Player of the Week Honors

Brandon Allen

Sept. 3, 2012

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University men's soccer players Jimmy Nealis (Massapequa, N.J./Massapequa) and Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph's) were both named BIG EAST Conference Players on the Week on Monday after the Hoyas went 3-0 for the week. Nealis was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and Allen earned BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors.

Nealis helped the Hoyas' defense allow just one goal in a 3-0-0 week. While anchoring a defense that was missing a key component of the backline, the senior defender and co-captain took a shot that led to an own goal and assisted on a gamewinner in a 2-1 victory against Penn State University. He was part of a defense with two shutouts on the week.

Allen scored three goals last week and all three were gamewinners. He led the Hoyas to three wins, scoring the lone goals against Florida Gulf Coast and Cal State Northridge, along with the deciding tally against Penn State. The freshman forward has made his mark early with goals in three-consecutive games to lead the squad with six points on the season.

Allen was also named the CollegeSoccerNews.com National Player of the Week for his efforts.

The honors mark the first weekly awards for the Blue & Gray this season. Georgetown's last rookie of the week award came last season on November 1 for Tom Skelly (Albuquerque, N.M./Shattuck St. Mary's). The last Hoya to win defensive player of the week honors was Tommy Muller (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) on October 3, 2011.

Last week, Georgetown moved into the national rankings sitting at No. 21 in both the NSCAA poll and the SoccerAmerica poll.

Georgetown will be back in action next weekend with a pair of nonconference games in the Midwest. The Hoyas will play the University of Illinois- Chicago on Friday at 8 p.m. ET and the University of Wisconsin- Madison on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.
