No. 18 Hoyas Travel to UConn on Saturday

Sept. 8, 2017

WASHINGTON - The No. 18 Georgetown University men's soccer squad (4-0) will travel to Storrs, Conn., to face the University of Connecticut Huskies (1-2) on Saturday evening at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Georgetown is coming off of a 2-0 weekend, but this will be the Hoyas’ first road test since the first game of the season.

On Monday, the Hoyas downed then-No. 15 UCLA, 1-0, at Shaw Field on a goal from sophomore forward Achara (Enugu, Nigeria/Berkshire School [Mass.]) in the 12th minute. It marked GU’s third shutout of the season and second win over a nationally-ranked opponent. For the effort, the Hoyas moved into the national rankings on Tuesday.

The Georgetown University men's soccer squad (1-4-0) picked up its first win of the 2016 season with a 1-0 victory over the University of Connecticut Huskies (3-2-0) on Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field. It also marked GU’s first shutout of the season.

Earlier this week, junior JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, while classmate Peter Schropp (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) earned defender of the week honors. Achara also earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

Marcinkowski, the BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, marked two wins in goal for the Blue & Gray as the junior allowed just one goal and added a shutout over then-No. 19 Coastal Carolina to his resume. Marcinkowski played all 180 minutes, marked four saves and a 0.50 goals against average.

Schropp helped Georgetown to an unbeaten week and limited two opponents to 18 shots as the Blue and Gray allowed just one goal. Schropp played all 180 minutes, limiting Cal Poly to eight shots and then-No. 19 Coastal Carolina to 10 shots and zero goals. Schropp also added a goal in the 3-0 win Monday over Coastal Carolina.

Achara tied for the league best with six points in a 2-0 week for Georgetown as the sophomore scored three goals, two in the 3-1 win over Cal Poly and the final insurance goal in the Hoyas’ victory over then-No. 19 Coastal Carolina.

Achara is leading the way for the Blue & Gray with five goals for 10 points on the season. He is followed by senior captain Christopher Lema (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial), junior Ethan Lochner (New York, N.Y./Stuyvesant) and freshman Derek Dodson (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) with one goal and one assist each for three points apiece. Freshman midfielder Jacob Montes (Lake Worth, Fla./Beaverton [Ore.]) has a squad-best two assists on the year.

In the goal, Marcinkowski has made eight saves with a 0.25 GAA in 360 minutes played.

The Huskies (1-2-0) are coming off a tight 1-0 loss to No. 6 Notre Dame on Saturday. UConn outplayed UND for the majority of the contest before a goal in the 84th minute gave the Fighting Irish a 1-0 win. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Scott Levene had three saves in the loss.

Four Huskies earned recognition from the American Athletic Conference this past Monday, including Levene as goalkeeper of the week and redshirt sophomore Nkosi Burgess as defensive player of the week. Junior Abdou Mbacke Thiam and freshman Blaise N'Gague were mentioned on the honor roll.

The Hoyas are 10-14-3 all-time against UConn, but 1-10-2 on the road. The last meeting in Storrs was a scoreless double-overtime tie in 2011. Last year, Georgetown defeated Connecticut, 1-0, at Shaw Field as Brett Campbell scored the game winner.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
