Corner Kicks: The Georgetown Men's Soccer Blog
Sept. 18, 2009
WASHINGTON - One of those things that you can never count on in sports is momentum. It doesn't matter who the better team is or how noisy a crowd can be, sometimes it comes down whether you're feeling it or your not, a factor that can completely change the face of a game. In fact sometimes the impact can be so big that it can change the entire landscape of a season.
Soccer is one of those games where a single moment can turn the tides completely. It's way too early to say that our win versus UCLA has propelled us to our goal of the NCAA Tournament, but it does mark the conquering of a mountain that has stood in our way for the past few years.
What I do know for sure is that our win against UCLA marked the emergence of a new-found confidence within the team that undoubtedly set the precedent for this past weekend's performance at the Davidson Tournament. We found our scoring form in the first match against Costal Carolina with goals coming from three different players including the first of Ian Christianson's Hoya career.
The most impressive part about winning the Davidson adidas Classic, was that we came into a neutral site with the poise of an experienced team and took care of business. That is exactly the type of outlook that we need to continue through the rest of the season to achieve our goal of the NCAA Tournament.
Later tonight we will be facing one of our toughest challenges of the season, playing national-powerhouse St. John's. The favorite to win the BIG EAST and a national semifinalist of last year, playing the Red Storm in Queens, N.Y., might be the biggest game of many of our careers.
We are far from the finish line, and each game poses a new challenge towards achieving our objective. We will show up prepared for battle as we do each week, and if we can walk out on that field with our sleeves rolled up ready to fight, scrape and want that game more than our opponents then we can get Georgetown another step closer to the Big Dance for only the third time in our program's history. Let's do it fellas.
