WASHINGTON - The No. 12 Georgetown University men's soccer squad (6-2) will host the No. 3 Creighton University Bluejays (5-1-1) on Saturday at Shaw Field in the squads' BIG EAST Conference opener. This weekend is Homecoming Weekend on the Hilltop and students are encouraged to Surround Shaw to support the squad in the first game of conference play.
On Monday, freshman midfielder Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after helping the Blue & Gray to a 2-0 week. Muyl has played a significant role in helping the Hoyas to their 6-2 start on the season.
The freshman had four points on the week as GU defeated the University of Pennsylvania, 3-0, on Thursday and downed Princeton University Tigers, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon. The pair of victories made the Hoyas 2-0 in the BIG EAST/Ivy League Challenge.
Muyl posted a goal and an assist in the Penn win as well as tallying four shots including three on goal. The goal was the first of his career on the Hilltop. In his second-career start against Princeton, Muyl added an assist on the first goal of the contest. He had one shot as well.
The award was the first of Muyl's career. It also marked the third nod to the honor roll for a Hoya so far this season.
Sophomore forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph's) leads the team in scoring with 14 points on six goals and two assists. Senior captain Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) is second with three goals and an assist, while Muyl has a goal and a team-high four assists for six points.
Junior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) has four shutouts on the season and has tallied 22 saves so far this year.
Creighton is 5-1-1 on the season most recently playing to a 2-2 double overtime draw on Tuesday evening. It was the fourth-consecutive double overtime match for the Bluejays which set a program record. On Monday, junior Eric Miller and freshman Fabian Herbers claimed Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors from the BIG EAST. Junior Alex Bolowich also claimed a spot on the BIG EAST weekly honor roll.
The Hoyas are 0-2 all-time against the Bluejays and this will be the second meeting under Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. The Blue & Gray fell, 6-0, at home on October 19, 2005. The following year, GU had a better showing dropping a 3-2 overtime decision at the Ameritas Classic in Omaha, Neb.
Saturday is Homecoming and fans are encouraged to support the Hoyas by surrounding Shaw Field.
Live stats and a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available at www.GUHoyas.com. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
