WASHINGTON - The No. 3/9 Georgetown University men's soccer team will continue BIG EAST Conference play on Saturday afternoon as the squad travels to the No. 10/10 University of Notre Dame for a 2 p.m., kickoff at Alumni Stadium. The Hoyas are currently 10-1-1 overall and 2-1-0 in BIG EAST play after suffering a tough loss, the first of the season, on Wednesday. It marks Georgetown's second top ten opponent in as many games.
On Wednesday, the Blue & Gray dropped a 2-1 decision to the University of Connecticut Huskies at North Kehoe Field. The Huskies scored on an odd play in the first half and another early in the second, but the Hoyas battled back. Senior forward Andy Riemer (McLean, Va./Georgetown Prep) found the back of the cage in the 66th minute on a pass from junior forward Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North), but it wasn't enough as Georgetown snapped an 11-game unbeaten streak.
On Monday, freshman forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph's) was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week and junior goalkeeper Keon Parsa (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real) earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Allen had five points in a 2-0 week for Georgetown. He assisted on the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win at James Madison, which snapped a 15-game home unbeaten streak, while also scoring two at Pitt in the 3-1 victory. He is leading the conference with six game winners this season.
Allen's award marked the fourth overall weekly honor for Georgetown.
Parsa made 10 saves over two games and posted a shutout for the Blue & Gray. He had five saves in the 1-0 victory at JMU as well as five saves in the victory at Pitt. It marked Parsa's first-career BIG EAST weekly honor.
Leading the way for Georgetown and the BIG EAST is Allen who has 18 points with eight goals including six game winners as well as two assists. Riemer has 12 points on six goals, while Neumann has 11 points with two goals and a team and conference-high seven assists.
In the net, Parsa has played in five games with 25 saves and three shutouts to his credit.
Notre Dame is 9-2-0 on the year and 1-2-0 in BIG EAST Conference play. UND's two losses came against UConn (2-1) and Louisville (2-1). The Irish have had five shutouts so far this season.
The Fighting Irish are led by senior forward Ryan Finley who has eight goals and one assist on the season for 17 points. Senior midfielder Dillon Powers has added four goals and a team-best four assists for 12 points to his credit. In the net, junior Patrick Wall and senior Will Walsh have split time. They have combined for 24 saves and a GAA of 0.81 for the season.
The BIG EAST Blue Division has been exceptional to start the season. Along with UConn, No. 9 Marquette remains undefeated and Georgetown's lone loss came to the Huskies. No. 10 Notre Dame stands at 9-2-0 with both losses coming to BIG EAST opponents.
Georgetown is 7-12-2 all-time against the Huskies, but has struggled in recent years with the last win coming in 2005. GU Head Coach Brian Wiese was at Notre Dame as an assistant for five seasons and has yet to defeat his former employer. Last season, the Hoyas lost, 3-0, at North Kehoe Field.
Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Alumni Stadium. Live stats and a free webcast will be available through the Notre Dame athletic website.
