WASHINGTON - The No. 9 Georgetown University men's soccer squad will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, on Saturday to battle the Xavier University Musketeers in the first meeting between the squads. The BIG EAST Conference matchup is the second in a two-game road swing for the Blue & Gray.
On Wednesday, Georgetown needed a second-half goal from freshman midfielder Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) to get the 1-0 victory at Providence College in the inaugural game at Ray Treacy Track. The victory moved the Hoyas to 9-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the BIG EAST.
Last week, the team went 2-0 with wins at American University (1-0) and at home against Seton Hall University (8-0). On Monday, senior captain Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) and junior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) both earned weekly honors.
Neumann was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after tallying three goals and two assists for an impressive eight points on the week. His point total helped him surpass the 100-career point mark making him just the fourth Hoya in program history to do so.
Neumann assisted on the game winner in the 85th minute in a 1-0 victory at American on Tuesday as the Hoyas closed out nonconference play. He followed that up with his second-career hat trick in an 8-0 victory over Seton Hall University on Saturday at Shaw Field. Neumann also posted an assist in the win.
It was the fourth weekly award for the Blue & Gray this season and Neumann's second of his career. Additionally, he was named to the CollegeSoccerNews.com National Team of the Week and the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week for his efforts.
Gomez earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for being a part of two shutouts last week. He tallied three saves in the pair of victories including two at American and one against Seton Hall. The nod to the honor roll was the second this season for Gomez and the fourth for the Blue & Gray. The goalkeeper has had six honor roll awards in his career.
Sophomore forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph's) leads the team in scoring with 17 points on seven goals and three assists. Neumann is second with six goals and three assists for 15 points, while freshman midfielder Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) is third with two goals and a team-high five assists for nine points. Gomez has seven shutouts on the season, the Hoya keepers have combined for nine total, and has tallied 36 saves so far this year.
Behind solid defense and goals from three different players, the Xavier men's soccer team picked up its first BIG EAST win with a 3-0 shutout at DePaul on Wednesday. With the win, the Musketeers improved to 5-5-2 overall and 1-2-0 in the BIG EAST Conference. Senior midfielder Matt Walker leads the squad with four goals and five assists for 13 points on the year. Goalkeeper Eric Osswald has four shutouts with a record of 5-3-2. He has tallied 39 saves on the season for a GAA of 0.81.
