Oct. 21, 2013
WASHINGTON - Georgetown University men's soccer freshman Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) was named the BIG EAST Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday, while senior forward Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Neumann was also named to the CollegeSoccerNews.com National Team of the Week, while freshmen Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School) and Muyl were both named to the midseason listing of TopDrawerSoccer.com's Top 100 Freshmen.
Muyl scored the game-winning goal and added an assist on the third tally of a 4-1 victory against No. 18 Butler, GU's lone game of the week. He scored one goal on two shots for the game. Muyl has three goals and a team-high six assists this season to rank third on the squad in scoring.
The award marks his first-career honor as the conference's Rookie of the Week and his second weekly award of the season after earning a spot on the weekly honor roll. It's also the fifth weekly award for the Blue & Gray so far this year.
Neumann tallied two goals and an assist in the Butler victory on just three shots for the game.
It marks his second nod to the honor roll as well as the CollegeSoccerNews.com Team of the Week this season.
Yaro and Muyl were both recognized on Monday as TopDrawerSoccer.com came out with its midseason list of the Top 100 Freshmen. Yaro was named the No. 1 freshman in the nation despite missing the past few games with an injury. He has started all 12 games he has been available for and played a huge role on defense for the Hoyas who have nine shutouts on the year. Additionally, Yaro scored the game winner, which was his first intercollegiate goal, in the 1-0 victory at American.
Muyl also earned a spot on the list sitting at No. 24.
The Blue & Gray will have a midweek game as the team continues at home matching with DePaul University on Saturday at 3 p.m., at Shaw Field. Live stats and a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
