WASHINGTON - Georgetown University men's soccer senior captain Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) was named the BIG EAST Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, while junior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) won BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors. Additionally, the Hoyas received big recognition in the national polls this week after improving to 12-3-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the BIG EAST to move into a tie for first with two games remaining.
Neumann scored two goals and had two assists in a 2-0 week for the Blue & Gray. He posted two goals and one assist in a 6-0 victory against DePaul on Wednesday. In a 1-0 overtime win at Marquette, Neumann assisted on the game's only goal. He is now the Hoyas' leading scorer with 26 points on 10 goals and six assists.
The award is the third offensive award for Georgetown this season as well as the seventh BIG EAST award overall. It is Neumann's second award after two nods to the Honor Roll and the fifth of his career.
Gomez posted a pair of shutouts while helping push the Hoyas into first place. He had one save in the DePaul win and played a huge role with five saves in the victory at Marquette. The MU shutout was significant as is helped the team break the season shutout record with 11. Additionally, Gomez broke the record for career shutouts posting 23 as well as season shutouts with nine to his credit this year.
This is Gomez's second weekly honor from the BIG EAST after two nods to the Honor Roll. It is the fourth of his career.
The Hoyas received national accolades on Monday moving into the No. 1 position in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Poll. GU has been in the top 15 of that national poll all season. Additionally, Georgetown moved into No. 2 in the most recent RPI rankings. Those rankings play a significant role in determining NCAA Tournament bids and seeding.
Georgetown has just two games remaining in the season, both against quality opponents.
On Saturday, the Hoyas will play at St. John's to face the always-talented Red Storm who are tough at home. The team will follow that up with the regular season finale at Shaw Field on Friday, Nov. 8 against Villanova.
