WASHINGTON - Two members of the No. 18 Georgetown University men’s soccer team earned BIG EAST Conference honors on Monday in the league’s final set of awards. Freshman forward Derek Dodson (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and classmate Jack Beer (Thornwood, N.Y./Byram Hills) earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors.
Dodson scored two goals in the Hoyas’ 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Creighton on Wednesday, the final day of the 2017 regular season. Dodson scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute. He followed it up with an insurance goal in the 83rd to help lock up the No. 2 seed for Georgetown and a first-round bye in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship, presented by Jeep. Dodson has eight goals this season, six in league play.
This is Dodson’s third weekly award after earning two BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors. He has also been named to the honor roll on two occasions.
Beer scored his first collegiate goal in Georgetown's win over Creighton. His goal came in the 30th minute, tying the game at 1-1 after the Bluejays had taken a one-goal lead. Beer’s goal started a Hoya rally that helped the Blue & Gray earn a first-round bye in the tournament. This is Beer’s first weekly honor.
The Hoyas end the season with 11 total weekly league awards as well as six nods to the honor roll.
As the No. 2 seed, Georgetown will have a first-round bye and host a semifinal game on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at Shaw Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN). Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
