WASHINGTON - The No. 8 Georgetown University men's soccer squad (12-4-1, 5-2-1 BIG EAST) will host the Villanova University Wildcats (8-8-1, 3-5-0 BIG EAST) on Friday at Shaw Field in a 2 p.m., BIG EAST Conference matchup. The game marks the regular-season finale for both squads as well as senior day for the Blue & Gray.
Prior to kickoff, all six seniors will be announced and there will be a ceremony honoring the class at halftime.
The senior class has had an impressive tenure on the Hilltop. The group has been a part of two NCAA Tournament berths, including last year's trip to the College Cup, as well as a pair of BIG EAST Blue Division Regular Season Championships and an appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament Championship Game. The class has been ranked for much of its time at Georgetown and posted a record of 53-19-10, making them the winningest class in program history, as well as a mark of 23-9-2 in BIG EAST play.
Last week, the Hoyas fell in a tough contest at St. John's, 1-0. Georgetown controlled the pace of the game, but the Red Storm snuck in a goal to hand GU its first loss in four games.
Senior captain Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) leads the team in scoring with 26 points on 10 goals and six assists. Sophomore forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph's) is second with 10 goals and three assists for 23 points, while freshman Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) has three goals and a team-high eight assists for 14 points.
Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) has a record nine shutouts on the season, while the Hoyas have a program-record 11 overall. The junior has tallied 50 saves so far this year.
Villanova has won four of its last six games, but fell in a heartbreaker on Saturday to Xavier, 1-0. The Wildcats looked good on offense, but allowed a goal with just three minutes remaining in the game to snap the deadlock. Nova has a balanced attack this season with sophomore Chris Hill leading the way with nine points, while 13 different players have tallied a point for the `Cats. In goal, junior Andrew Weakly has appeared in 16 games with 79 saves and five shutouts to his credit.
Georgetown is 21-12-5 all-time against Villanova with the Blue & Gray winning the last meeting in 2011, 2-0. Neumann and then-freshman Tyler Rudy (Olney, Md./Sherwood) both scored and classmate Tom Skelly (Albuquerque, N.M./Shattuck-St. Mary's) assisted on both goals. The last game in the District was in 2010 when the Hoyas came out on top, 3-1. In that game, Neumann scored a pair of goals for the Hoyas.
Kickoff on Saturday at Shaw Field is scheduled for 2 p.m. Live stats and a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
