Georgetown Hosts Xavier in BIG EAST Championship on Sunday

WASHINGTON - The No. 18, and second-seeded, Georgetown University men's soccer squad will host the fourth-seeded Xavier University Musketeers in the BIG EAST Conference Championship game on Sunday afternoon at noon at Shaw Field. The Hoyas are currently 13-3-2 on the season.

Sunday’s contest will be broadcast live on FS2 with Jay Alter on play-by-play and Jamie Watson as the color analyst. The game will also be available on FOX Sports Go. Live stats will be available at

No. 9 Hoyas Fall in Overtime at Xavier
The No. 9 Georgetown University men’s soccer team battled into extra minutes, but fell early in overtime, 1-0, to the Xavier University Musketeers (5-1-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) in both squads’ BIG EAST Conference opener. It marked the first loss of the season for the Blue & Gray that falls to 4-1-1 on the season and 0-1 in league play.

The Hoyas advanced to the championship with a 2-1 victory over third-seeded St. John's on Wednesday afternoon at Shaw Field in the league semifinal. In his first start since Oct. 6, sophomore forward Achara (Enugu, Nigeria/Berkshire School [Mass.]) scored just 74 seconds into the match. Freshman forward Derek Dodson (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) added the game winner in the 66th minute on an assist from senior captain Christopher Lema (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial).

Dodson is leading the way for the Blue & Gray with nine goals and two assists for 20 points on the season. He is followed by Achara with seven goals and one assist for 15 points on the year. Seniors Declan McCabe (Weston, Mass./The Rivers School) and Lema round out the top three with 12 points apiece this season.

In goal, junior goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) has made 58 saves with a 0.65 GAA in 1,668:48 minutes played. He also has eight shutouts on the year.

Dodson was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year as well as earning a spot on the second team. Lema and junior defender Brendan McDonough (Matthews, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) were named to the first team, Marcinkowski and McCabe joined Dodson on the second team.



The Musketeers moved to 11-5-3 on Wednesday night, advancing past top-seeded Butler, 4-1, in penalty kicks after playing to a 2-2 draw in double overtime at Butler's Sellick Bowl. XU wrapped up a fourth-place league finish with a 5-4 league record this fall and is making a fifth-straight appearance in the BIG EAST Championships, having never missed the tournament as a member of the league.

Georgetown is 3-4 all-time against Xavier, but fell during the regular season meeting, 1-0, in overtime in Cincinnati. The last meeting at Shaw Field was a 2-0 Hoya loss during the 2016 season.

The Hoyas are 14-19-5 overall in the BIG EAST Tournament and 8-1-1 at home as well as 1-4-0 in the championship game. Georgetown is 1-1 all-time against the Musketeers in the tourney, winning the last meeting in the 2015 semifinal, 1-0. GU lost to Xavier in the 2014 semifinal by a score of 1-0.
