WASHINGTON - Georgetown University junior forward Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) is one of 15 men's soccer student-athletes that have been selected as semifinalists for the country's top soccer award. Fifteen men and 15 women were announced on Wednesday as the Missouri Athletic Club's (MAC) Hermann Trophy semifinalists.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer. It is presented annually in January during a banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
NCAA Division I coaches will help select the winner. New this year is a fan voting component, conducted through LockerDome, which allows fans to also contribute to picking this year's MAC Hermann Trophy winners. Click HERE to vote!
Neumann is a three-time All-BIG EAST honoree and 2012 marked his second time on the first team. He is second on the team in scoring with seven goals and 12 assists for 26 points. Neumann's 12 assists rank him first in the BIG EAST Conference and fifth in the nation in helpers. Already this season, the forward was the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, TopDrawerSoccer.com Forward of the Week and earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
He has played a vital role in Georgetown's postseason run.
Georgetown earned its fourth NCAA Tournament berth in program history after tying for the BIG EAST Blue Division Regular Season Championship and advancing to the BIG EAST Tournament Championship Game before falling in double overtime. The Hoyas earned the third overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and have gone 1-0-1 to advance to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history.
Neumann was on the Hermann Watch List at the beginning of the season along with four other semifinalists. He is one of six players from the BIG EAST Conference which dominated the list including players from the University of Connecticut, the University of Louisville and the University of Notre Dame. Neumann is also one of only five juniors to be named semifinalists.
Georgetown was the only institution to have a student-athlete on both the men's and the women's list with sophomore midfielder Daphne Corboz (Greenbrook, N.J./Watchung Hills) earning a spot on the women's side.
The top three vote-getters for each gender will be announced Thursday, Dec. 6. The winner will be announced during the MAC Hermann Trophy banquet in St. Louis on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013.
Georgetown will host San Diego in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday at 1 p.m., at North Kehoe Field.
