Christianson, Muller and Nealis Invited to MLS Combine

WASHINGTON - Three Georgetown University men's soccer players have received invitations to the 2013 adidas Major League Soccer Player Combine the league announced on Tuesday. Seniors Ian Christianson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Christian Life), Tommy Muller (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) and Jimmy Nealis (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) were among 54 college seniors to be invited to the event, three was the most from all schools invited.
Christianson is one of the most decorated players in Georgetown history. He has received a total of four NSCAA and College Soccer News All-American honors, is a three-time NSCAA All-Northeast Region honoree and been named All-BIG EAST for the past three seasons. He started 77 of 78 career games played and finished with 14 goals and 10 assists for 38 points.
This past season, the midfielder had two goals and two assists as a two-time team captain.
Muller is part of a talented backline that posted 10 shutouts this season. In his career on the Hilltop, he appeared in 64 games with 59 starts and tallied four goals as well as four assists for 12 points as a two-year captain. Muller was a Third Team All-BIG EAST honoree this past season.
Nealis is a NSCAA All-Region honoree for the second time in his career. The team captain is a two-time All-BIG EAST award winner with two goals and 15 assists in his career on the Hilltop. Nealis has started in 71 of the 83 games he has appeared in for the Hoyas.
The 2012 senior class, including Christianson, Muller and Nealis, is the most successful class in program history. Their arrival sparked a turning point for the program as they have helped move the Hoyas into an elite class and took the team to the national championship game.
Through a national championship game appearance, a trip to the College Cup, two NCAA Tourament berths, a trip to the BIG EAST Championship game, a two BIG EAST Regular Season Championship, four-consecutive BIG EAST Tournament berths and a presence in the national rankings, including moving into the top 10 this season ranking as high as No. 3 they made their mark at Georgetown. Over four years, the seniors combined for a record of 50-23-11 overall and 24-12-1 in BIG EAST play.
Georgetown has only had one other player in program history invited to the combine and none under Head Coach Brian Wiese. Dan Gargan participated following the 2004 collegiate season, he currently plays for the Chicago Fire of the MLS.
The 2013 adidas MLS Player Combine will be held at Central Broward Regional Park in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., prior to the SuperDraft. The invited players will be divided into four separate teams that are led by prominent collegiate coaches and select youth coaches. Matches will be played as doubleheaders on January 11, 13 and 15. Each match is closely monitored by technical staff from all 19 MLS clubs.
For the ninth consecutive year, the MLS SuperDraft will be held in conjunction with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Convention, and take place on Thursday, January 17, at the Indiana Convention Center, in Indianapolis, Ind. The SuperDraft will begin at noon ET.
The 2013 MLS SuperDraft will include two rounds and 38 overall selections. The first nine selections are currently held by clubs that did not qualify for the 2012 MLS Cup Playoffs, in reverse order of regular season finish. The remaining 10 positions currently belong to clubs that were eliminated in the same round of the 2012 MLS Cup Playoffs, in reverse order of regular season finish. A four-round Supplemental Draft will take place via conference call on Tuesday, January 22, 2013.
