WASHINGTON - Two Georgetown University men's soccer players have received invitations to the 2014 adidas Major League Soccer Player Combine the league announced on Wednesday. Seniors Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) and Joey Dillon (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) were among 50 college seniors to be invited to the event. Georgetown was one of just 10 schools to have multiple players invited.
Neumann, a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist and First Team All-Region honoree, was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year after an outstanding senior campaign. He scored a league-leading seven goals in nine games and had 18 points for the top-seeded Hoyas. Overall, he finished with 10 goals and six assists for 26 points, also first in the conference. Neumann was the 2013 BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year ending the regular season where he began. He was also named First Team All-BIG EAST.
It was the co-captain's fourth-consecutive All-BIG EAST honor and third-consecutive nod to the first team, he was the lone unanimous selection. The Offensive Player of the Year award was Neumann's first and the third in program history following Ricky Schramm in 2004 and Eric Kvello in 1997.
The forward earned one BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honor and two nods to the honor roll as well as weekly honors from CollegeSoccerNews.com and TopDrawerSoccer.com.
Midfielder Dillon helped lead the Hoyas to a share of the BIG EAST regular-season crown and the No. 1 seed earning his BIG EAST Co-Midfielder of the Year honors along with a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team. A two-way standout, he helped the Blue & Gray lead the conference in goals with 22 and rank first in fewest goals allowed with four. It was Dillon's first-career BIG EAST honor and first nod to an all-conference squad. He was also a co-captain along with Neumann and classmate Keon Parsa (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real).
Last year, the Hoyas had three players invited to the combine and all three were selected in the MLS SuperDraft. Ian Christianson, Tommy Muller and Jimmy Nealis all received the invite. It was the most in program history and the first under Head Coach Brian Wiese. A fourth, Andy Riemer, was picked up in the MLS Supplemental Draft.
Prior to last year, Georgetown has only had one other player in program history invited to the combine. Dan Gargan participated following the 2004 collegiate season.
The 2014 adidas MLS Player Combine will be held at Central Broward Regional Park in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., prior to the SuperDraft. The invited players will be divided into four separate teams that are led by prominent collegiate coaches and select youth coaches. Matches will be played as doubleheaders on January 10-14. Each match is closely monitored by technical staff from all 19 MLS clubs.
For the 10th consecutive year, the MLS SuperDraft will be held in conjunction with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Convention, and take place on Thursday, January 16, at the Philadelphia Convention Center, in Philadelphia, Pa.
The 2014 MLS SuperDraft will include four rounds and 76 overall selections. The first nine selections are currently held by clubs that did not qualify for the 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs, in reverse order of regular season finish. The remaining 10 positions currently belong to clubs that were eliminated from the 2012 MLS Cup Playoffs in order of elimination.
