Willey, Lengle, and Dagget lead GU Men's Swimming to Two Victories
Georgetown went 2-0 this past week when the Hoyas defeated Howard, 140-87, on January 28, and BIG EAST foe Providence, 136-92, on January 29. Both meets took place at the Yates Field House. The two wins stretched the Hoyas' winning streak to three games and improved their record to 3-7.
Against Providence, John Willey (Sr., Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) and Chris Lengle (So., Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) were both double-winners. Willey posted victories in the 50 and 100 freestyle races with times of 22.37 and 48.48, respectively, while Lengle touched the wall in 2:02.34 in the 200 I.M. and swam the 500 freestyle in 5:00.72. Brett Daggett (Fr., Wauchula, Fla./Hardee) also finished first in both diving events. He won the one meter with a score of 187.83, and registered a 174.6 off the three meter board. Will Miller's (So., Farmingdale, N.J./Freehold Boro) time of 10:37.48 in the 1000 freestyle also garnered him a victory.
GU saw five of its swimmers seize second-place honors. Michael Wiess (Jr., Margate, N.J./Cherry Hill East) finished the 200 freestyle in 1:53.38, and Bryan Evangelista (Fr., Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) totaled a 54.35 in the 100 fly. Michael Dowley (Fr., McLean, Va./Langley), Evan Behr (Fr., Gwynedd Valley, Pa./LaSalle) and Richard Dennis (Jr., Waterville, Maine/Waterville) also had outstanding swims. Dowley fared well in the 100 backstroke (58.95), while Behr and Dennis proved their mettle in the 500 freestyle (5:08.00) and the 100 breaststroke (1:02.75), respectively.
The team of Weiss, Miller, Behr, and Willey won the 400 freestyle relay (3:23.65), while GU's Brendan Moynihan (Sr., New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), Dennis, Evangelista, and Lengle tallied second in the 400 medley relay (3:41.53).
On Saturday, the Hoyas were victorious in every individual event against Providence at the Yates field House. Georgetown was led by John Willey (Sr., Riverside, Conn./Greenwich), Chris Lengle (So., Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee), Ross Savedge (Fr., Richmond, Va./Governors School), and Brett Daggett (Fr., Wauchula, Fla./Hardee) as each earned double wins on the afternoon. Willey won the 200 freestyle (1:45.24) and led a sweep of the 500 freestyle after posting a time of 4:55.59. He was followed by Will Miller's (So., Farmingdale, N.J./Freehold Boro) 5:06.19 and Michael Wiess' (Jr., Margate, N.J./Cherry Hill East) 5:13.58. Weiss also finished second in the 1000 freestyle (10:38.53).
Lengle notched wins in the 50 freestyle (21.98) as well as the 100 freestyle (48.37), Savedge touched in 2:08.44 in the 200 I.M. and 2:02.93 in the 200 fly. Daggett's double wins were by virtue of the diving events. He registered a 156.9 off the one-meter board and a 109.9 from the three-meter. Bryan Evangelista (Fr., Northport, N.Y./St.
Anthony's) tallied a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle (149.57). Brendan Moynihan (Sr., New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) earned second in the 50 freestyle (23.42). GU's Moynihan, Richard Dennis (Jr., Waterville, Maine/Waterville), Evangelista, and Lengle seized the win in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.94.
The Hoyas face Drexel on Saturday, February 5, at 1:00 p.m. at Yates Field House for their final home meet of the season.
