Georgetown Defeats George Mason, 6-1

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown men’s tennis team (3-1) defeated the George Mason Patriots (1-1), 6-1, on Friday night at the International Country Club in Fairfax, Va.
The Hoyas only won one doubles match, but swept all six singles matches to grab the win over George Mason.
Freshmen Yannik Mahlangu (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley) and Jack Murphy (Coronado, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) defeated Jimmy Davis and Aaron Capitel of George Mason for the Hoyas’ only doubles victory, 6-1. Dating back to the fall, Mahlangu and Murphy are 4-1 in doubles play.
In singles play, sophomore Daniel Khanin (Baldwin, N.Y./Pendleton) beat George Mason’s Jimmy Lange in the No. 1 position, 6-3; 6-2, which established a trend of five two-set victories for Georgetown.
Junior Shane Korber (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) won his second singles match of the spring in his three chances and senior co-captain Casey Distaso (The Woodlands, Texas/Edmond North) moved to 3-0 to start the spring season.
Murphy still has not lost a singles match this spring as well as he moved to 4-0 when he defeated George Mason’s Aaron Capitel, 6-1; 6-3. Murphy defeated Capitel in both doubles and single play on Friday night.
Mahlangu, who was last week’s BIG EAST Male Tennis Player of the Week, won in the No. 5 position for the Hoyas.
Georgetown junior Alex Tropiano (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), who has three doubles victories this spring, competed and won his first singles match of 2014 in the No. 6 position.
