WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's tennis squad defeated Mary Washington University on Sunday afternoon by a score of 7-0. With the victory, the Hoyas improve to 4-1 on the season.
In doubles play, the Blue & Gray won in positional order to pick up the point over the Eagles. The No. 1 pair of senior Andrew Bruhn (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) and junior Charlie Caris (Des Moines, Iowa/Theodore Roosevelt) won, 8-4, over Evan Charles and Donato Rizzolo. At No. 2, Georgetown's freshman Alex Tropiano (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) and sophomore Andrew Dottino (New York, N.Y./The Pendleton School) were victorious over Tyler Carey and Sam Wichlin by a score of, 8-4.
In singles play, the Hoyas swept the Eagles. Freshman John Brosens (Bedford, N.Y./Brunswick School) started it out at No. 6 with the 6-2, 6-0 over Riley Baver. No. 1 Bruhn then managed the 6-3, 6-3 victory over Wichlin and No. 4 Dottino picked up the 6-1, 6-1 win over Carey as the Hoyas went ahead 3-0.
Georgetown clinched the match at No. 3, when Caris fought in a three-set battle eventually winning 2-6, 6-4, 10-4 over Alex Blakhin.
GU cruised to victory in the final two matches as No. 5 sophomore Casey Distaso (The Woodlands, Texas/Edmond North) and No. 2 freshman Shane Korber (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) both won making the final 7-0.
Georgetown will be back in action on Wednesday as the squad travels to the University of Pennsylvania for a 2 p.m., match.
