WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's men's tennis team won its second straight match, defeating local rival Navy 5-2 at the McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex. The Hoyas are 3-0 at home this season and own a 4-8 overall record.
Last season the Hoyas squeaked out a 4-3 victory in Annapolis, Md. when current junior Andrew Dottino (New York, N.Y./The Pendleton School) secured a three set victory, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 7-6 (5) at No. 4 singles in the last remaining match on the court. This year's match did not end with such excitement as Georgetown won four of six singles and the doubles point.
Sophomores Alex Tropiano (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) and Shane Korber (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) both had solid days against Navy, each winning their singles matches and combining for a doubles win. Tropiano won 6-1, 6-2 at six singles and Korber notched a 6-2, 6-3 win at five. They combined to win second doubles 8-4.
Daniel Khanin (Baldwin, N.Y.) and Reese Milner (Los Angeles, Calif./Crossroads) were the first off the doubles court with an 8-4 win. That win combined with Tropiano and Korber's win at No. 2 gave GU the doubles point.
In singles Korber's win at six and Tropiano's at five gave GU a 3-1 advantage. Milner then won the deciding match for GU at third singles, 6-3, 6-1. On court four Casey Distaso (The Woodlands, Texas/Edmond North) earned a 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 win to give GU the 5-2 win.
The Hoyas stay home for their next three matches, starting with Marist on Thursday, March 21.
