WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's tennis team picked up two wins on Sunday. The Hoyas knocked off The Citadel by a score of 4-3 and beat Navy 4-0. With the wins, GU improved to 6-10 on the season.
The Blue & Gray started off the day against Navy. The team got off to a hot start by winning all the completed doubles matches to pick up the doubles point. At No. 2 Peter Beatty (Portland, Ore./Middlesex School) and Mac Rechan (Clayton, Mo./Clayton) won by a score of 6-3, and at No. 3 Jordan Portner (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) and Marco Lam (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Boys' School) won 6-2.
Georgetown continued its dominating play into the singles matches, where they won all three completed matches. Two wins came in straight sets as Beatty won 6-4, 7-5 at No.1 and Portner won 7-6, 7-5 at No. 3. The final win came at No. 4 as Michael Chen (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel High School) won 6-7, 6-2, 6-1.
In the second match of the day, once again the Hoyas started strong by sweeping the doubles point. Beatty and Rechan won at No. 1, 6-1. The other two wins came by Bart Paranese (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy) and Jack Murphy (Coronado, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) at No. 2, 6-3, and by Ian Witmer (North Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) and Will Sharton (Wayland, Mass./Wayland High School) at No. 3 by a score of 6-1.
At No. 1, Beatty remained consistent and won handily 6-1, 6-3. The other two wins came by Chen at No. 5 by a score of 6-1, 6-2 and by Witmer at No. 6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Hoyas return to action on Friday, April 7 when they travel to Temple for a match at 1 p.m.
