WASHINGTON - Senior Charlie Caris (Des Moines, Iowa/Theodore Roosevelt) and sophomore Alex Tropiano (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) each pulled out close singles victories to ensure a 4-3 win over UMBC on Wednesday afternoon. It was the seventh 4-3 match played by the Hoyas this season, with GU recording a 5-2 record. Overall Georgetown now owns an 11-9 mark and has won nine of its last 10 matches.
Georgetown squeezed out the doubles point with victories on courts two and three. The sophomore duo of Tropiano and Shane Korber (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) won 8-2 at two while Reese Milner (Los Angeles, Calif./Crossroads) and Daniel Khanin (Baldwin, N.Y./Pendleton) clinched the doubles point on three, 8-4.
In order to win the match the Hoyas had to win the final two singles matches at the end of the day. Georgetown was down 3-2 in the match with only Caris on court two and Tropiano on court six still playing. Caris, playing his penultimate singles match at home, climbed out of a 3-0 hole in the third set to win 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. To clinch a 4-3 victory for the second time this season Tropiano won a tiebreaker in the second set 9-7 to record a 6-2, 7-6 (7) win.
Junior Casey Distaso (The Woodlands, Texas/Edmond North) also won a pivotal match on court five, 6-2, 6-0.
The Hoyas close out the regular season on Thursday, April 11, at 2 p.m. against George Mason at GU's McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex.
