WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's tennis team finished off a strong regular season campaign with a 5-2 win over the Villanova University Wildcats on Saturday at the McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex. The Hoyas won six of their last seven matches to finish the regular season with a mark of 14-7 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST Conference play.
The Hoyas swept doubles play to pick up the first point of the match. Senior Andrew Bruhn (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) and Brian Ward (Darwin, Minn./Litchfield) won at No. 1, 8-1, in their last day competing on the Hilltop. At No. 2, freshman Alex Tropiano (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) and sophomore Andrew Dottino (New York, N.Y./The Pendleton School) nabbed the 8-4 victory, while at No. 3, junior Charlie Caris (Des Moines, Iowa/Theodore Roosevelt) and senior Rafael Notario(Bethesda, Md./The Heights School) picked up the win by a score of 8-1.
In singles play, Caris started things out at No. 2 with the 6-1, 6-1 victory. Villanova pulled within one, but Bruhn came back to make it 3-1 with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1. Freshman Shane Korber(Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) clinched the match with a three-set victory at No. 4. Korber beat his opponent 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Sophomore Casey Distaso(The Woodlands, Texas/Edmond North) rounded it out with a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 5 to make the final, 5-2.
Distaso has won his last six singles matches, Ward has won his past five.
The seedings for the 2012 BIG EAST Championship will be announced on Monday with play beginning on Thursday in Tampa, Fla., at the University of South Florida.
