Men's Tennis Loses First Round of the BIG EAST Championship
April 21, 2006
Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown men's tennis team lost a 4-0 decision to top-seeded Notre Dame today at the BIG EAST Championship at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts in Tampa, Fla. The Hoyas drop to 6-11 overall as the 16th-ranked (Fila/Inter-collegiate Tennis Association) Irish improve to 18-5 and now lead 3-0 in the head-to-head series. Georgetown will next play St. John's in the consolation draw on Saturday, April 22. Doubles is slated for 9 a.m. with singles immediately following.
The doubles team of sophomores Etienne Paris (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) and Theodore Tywang (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) lost an 8-4 decision at the second doubles position to start the day. Senior Eric Conrad (Gloucester, Mass./St. John's Prep) and freshman Kevin Walsh (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton) fell just shy of a victory as they lost, 9-7, at the top doubles spot. That match would clinch the doubles point for the Irish, providing a 1-0 lead going into singles play.
After a stellar doubles effort, Conrad lost 6-2, 6-0 at the second singles position, adding another point to the ND tally. Junior Bert Baggio (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) lost in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) at fifth singles. Paris, playing the top singles position, lost the deciding match for the 4-0 Irish victory.
The Hoyas lost to the Red Storm earlier this season (Feb. 18), 6-1, with the lone victory coming from junior Kevin Killeavy (Indian Harbor Beach, Fla./Melbourne Central Catholic).
